Yuppers. They have to run new wiring to speakers. Depending on your model, you either have an external amp for the rear only, or one for front and rear. These are located under the DS drivers side storage bins. You have two options.

One
Run new wiring directly from the new stereo to the speakers. Recommended

Two
Run wiring from the new stereo to the wiring on the output side of the amplifiers.

either way, its an easy job, just time consuming, which makes it really expensive for an audio shop to do it.

good luck

If you have the radio with a joystick, you need to run wires to both the front and rear speakers. If not, you most likely only need to run for the rear. The front speakers are powered by the stock radio on the low end models. And only the high end model had the joystick.

Yup, you are going to have to run new wiring to both the front and rear speakers. It is just easier to go ahead and run directly from the new unit. This way you can ensure that you have good quality wiring, not 25 year old crap.

Does not sound like a Stereo shop I would take my car to. In fact I wouldn't take my car to any stereo shop that I know of. Most of these so called speciality shops due hack work. It's very easy to run new speaker cable to your speakers. And if you did not want to you can just figure out the wiring diagram and use the existing harness.

I rewired mine in just one lazy afternoon. It's pretty easy, actually.

i just redid my setero system. i installed 6x9 in the rear, 5 1/4 in the doors, and ran all new wires. making the adjustments for the speakers was by far the hardest part. if you were to keep the stock sized speakers and run new wire, itd be a piece of cake. if you dont have the knowledge to do so, you can easily get help here.

running all new wire cost me less than $20. for wire and crimps.
