Question involving steering adjustment
Question involving steering adjustment
In attempting to tighten up my steering (got nearly 2 inches of play), I loosened the nut, but the slotted screw in the middle turns with it. I've tried holding the nut with pliers, still mated together.
Question: Can I remove this altogether without forking up something in the steering box? I figure I'll have to take the nut assembly out to break it loose from the adjusting screw. I won't take it out until I know I can put it back in with no bad things happening.
BTW- Where do you add lubricant to the box? maybe in the hole when the nut is off?
Thanks!

Your best bet is to check the Mazspeed site at www.mazspeed.com. Go to the facts section and check out the steering gear restoration. They content that using this procedure will give a better result than just adjusting the nut. They're pretty reputable, so it should work.

MW,
Put a biga$$ screwdriver on the slot and turn the nut with a proper wrench. There is a limit to how far the slot will go before it bottoms out. To tighten the steering, you turn it clockwise. Hold it down good, then tighten the nut with the proper wrench.
Now, on the other hand...The "steering box fix" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. It is a little confusing but once you get into it, it will make sense. You won't believe what it will do for your steering either!
Then again, you can always buy a new box!

Tightening that screw adjusts the sector shaft engagement. Overtightening it to compensate for wear can result in binding and premature failure. The steering box is filled via that nylon plug on top of the box. Suck out the old 90W and replace it with Amsoil 75-90W gear oil. That's the best thing you can do for the steering box.
The nut and the screw are still locked together tighter than hat's dickband.
I still need to know if I can take this assembly all the way off without hurting something.
Maybe no one's tried it?

Will do, thanks! Got the plugs out with ATF inside, 2 inches of snow outside. Good time to let it sit with liquid wrench.
I still need someone to 'hold my hand' and give me a
"Steering fix for dummies' translation of the mazspeed instructions.

use a 14mm open end wrench, loosen locknut and keeping the wrench on the nut use a screwdriver to turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise... it helps if you have somebody wiggle the steeringwheel back and forth while turning the screw.... after your done adjusting, hold the screwdriver and tighten the 14mm nut..... done!!!
one time a nut was stripped , instead of disassembeling the steeringbox we adjusted the screw then to lock the screw we used threadlock then some superglue, it worked fine and he is still driving it like that , 2 years later!! p/s the steering box is pretty inexpensive from the dealer $250.00 , one problem though .....its discontinued!!! no longer available
