Pressed in speedometer gear?

I gleefully went to connect my 1980 threaded speedometer cable and discovered this:

I do have this, which would work with my cable:

but the old pressed in unit is not budging. I tried a small propane torch to no avail. It seems all listed SA/FB cables are universal. I’m stating to lean towards drilling this out piece by piece. I’m sure there is a less savage non Camaro way of solving this.

Well, W.T.F.
That is a weird aftermarket mod. And obv a PITA. The separate gear piece you show is correct, of course. Head-scratcher to swap them out, esp w/o damaging the TX housing. At least you have the gearbox out off the car to make it easier to correct. Wish I had an idea. Others will!

If you refer to the insert already in-place, all I can say is this is not a Mazda RX7 part...

Assuming you can't remove the weird one without damaging the case, and if the output shaft rotates as it should (does it?) then could you make an adapter?

If you're okay cutting up your Mazda part

Take the top part (shell?) and and attach it to the transmission case something like this...the blue is the existing weird part and the grey is the threaded bit form the proper part.

Glad you were able to get it out! The speedometer gear fit in the trans ok still? Did you remember to lube the o-ring on the speedo gear?

If one is available, I think I would install a new one as well. A light coat of oil would be fine for the o-ring and would ensure it would not he difficult to remove in the future should you have to remove it.
