Question Power steering question

I have had a problem with my power steering pump in my '85 GSL-se. It makes a humming noise that gets worse with turning the wheel and increasing the rpms. I orginally thought that it was air in the line, but I tried the turn method and did not work. Yesterday I changed the belts and it still did not solve the problem. My question is would it be OK to just remove the belt from the power steering pump without doing damage to the unit and the engine? I have already performed a search and have seen mixed reviews. Some people have just removed the belt and others have removed the pump. I planned on getting a new pump in a couple of months. Any help would be appreciated.

shouldn't do any harm, i don't think.........most people remove the pump becuase its harder to push the fluid through the pump then the stripped system.

Cool

Thanks for the info. Hopefully it won't be to difficult to turn the wheel, but at least I won't do any engine damage. Plus I will get rid of that annoying squeel.
Thanks and any other info would be good.
