possible carb problem.. or vacuum?

Hi there

I am new to this forum, and I haven't done anything to my poor old 'rex in years.

My 1981 rx7 has been idling very rough, and there is a strange sound.. almost like wind blowing over a bottle or something.. last night, I took the air cleaner cover off to have a look at it, and started plugging air holes with my thumb. Sure enough, as soon as I plugged one of them, the noise went away, and the idle went smooth.

I checked the haynes manual, but that particular vacuum line is not mentioned at all.. If you are looking towards the back of the car, the hole is to the left of the idle compensator, and the hose itself is about an inch wide (maybe smaller, it was dark outside), and seems to be going towards the bottom of the carb (again, it was dark out, not sure.. ).

I am going outside to check it again soon, but I thought I would try to ask if anybody knew what it is called...

thx

Its the shudder valve or something like that. If it makes a howling noise, then its bad.. either replace it, or plug it up with a wire cap or something. Problem solved.

Hi.. I tried to edit the thread to change "card" to "carb" but I don't think it worked....

I checked out that thread you linked to.. I'm still not sure what the solution is... are they saying to just plug the hose and it's solved? Or do I need to replace the ACV?

I tried to search ACV, but I didn't find anything else that I can use...

BTW, I should mention that my car does not have a catalytic converter... it has a straight pipe with a pre-silencer and a dynamax turbo muffler... not sure if this has anything to do with the ACV at all, but I thought I sould mention it...

Also, why is my full name showing instead of the nick I provided? And why does it say "Exhaust leak" under my name?

I tried to edit my profile, but I can't seem to change the name thing..

So if I plug up this hose, I shouldn't have any problem?

What's it normally used for?

can't help on the nick. you can ask a moderator to change it if you want. exhaust leak is what you're "dubbed" until you reach x posts. then it will be something else till you reach y posts. so on and so forth until you reach 1000 and get to change it to what ever you want.

It is not he acv valve, it is the shutter valve. You can plug up the vacuum line, or you can fix it. Here's how to fix it

Would there be any problems at all plugging this up?

Also, where can one get this mazda service manual... I could see that being very useful... Does mazda sell it?

Thanks again!

THX for all the help folks....

I went out there today and took the hose off the air cleaner, and shoved an old AA battery in the hose... car now runs great... it doesn't backfire or decelerate any differently than it ever did, so I am assuming that the shutter valve hasn't been working for quite a while... it's like i suddenly have my old car back... sniff sniff.. sorry, getting emotional here...

now I just have to stop up the pipe coming out of the air cleaner, get a proper hose plug of some sort, and then fix all the other, non engine related problems this car has... (suspension, steering, seats, interior stuff, etc, etc... )

By the way, I have had this car since 1992, and have never had a major problem with the engine... Long live the RX7...

Brent

(I still want to change my nick.. how the hell do I do this? where do you contact a moderator?)
