Tire Size

I have an 83 GS with the stock rims. It is time to replace the tires. I was thinking about the Yokohama Avid T4's in the stock size of 185/70. Anybody have any other suggestions? I don't really want to buy rims quite yet. I have other things I want to do with the car first.

So I guess that means: I am looking for reccommendations for tires for the stock GS rim, not only manufacturer and models, but sizes too. Thanks!

Interesting..... why the 100's in the front and the 200's in the back? BTW, tiretack doesn't have the 100's anymore.

dave gave me the 200's and i worked at rudolph tire distribution tire slingin' one fall so i went back and asked my supervisor for an "ex-employee" discount. so i got the 100's for $30 a tire. supposedly they have less grip but treadwear # is a lot lower then the 200's. 200's had more hydro resistance also and i wanted to make sure the *** end would stay behind me in the rain.

ghetto i believe the gsl's had a 185 or 195/70/13. it will be marked somewhere on the car and the rim size is cast onto the rim somewhere. just dust and look. might try www.tirerack.com and search for tires for your car and it should come up with stock size.

jeremy, the sumotomo 200's are cheap! Almost hard to resist cheap. I'm about ready to click the buy-it button on tirerack. Do you experience any rubbing with the tires? Are they significantly smaller/larger in diameter then the stock? Would you buy them again? Thanks!

I have a set of kuhmos that are 205/60/13s that work just fine. I usually don't run them on the street, just at autocross, but I have and they work great.

no rubbing and i'm lowered. the 100's seem to have wider tread and they're up front. tirerack was up to 40 a few weeks ago. i just bought the 100's due to time constraints and not having to ship them. they are cheap though and you don't feel bad with the *** end hanging out watching rubber chunks spatter onto people's windshields.

Okay, done deal! I clicked the buy button. Anything's better then the f'n Kelly's I got on there now! Plus with all I've spent on my suspension lately I just don't have it in me to buy new 15" rims and tires. These should hold me over for a while.

my personal fave was the yoko A509 in 195/60/13. THey do not make em anymore so I would go with AVS intermediates in 185/60/13 after that the sumitomos. It is a sad state of tire selection for 13's these days.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think I am going to go buy the sumitomo 200's since I would rather H than T rated tires. The tires on my car now are probably 6 or 7 years old. They have a lot of tread left, but are cracking like h*ll. I just hope that the 205 width won't rub on tight turns, or it'll get annoying. My car just failed NJ inspection today for emissions. Just f'n great... more money spent at the f'n dealership. Anyone know of a place in NJ that does good work on rotary engines? It looks like the tires might have to wait a few weeks.

185/70-13 ghetto

i didn't even realize the intermediates were offered in 13's. those tires have STICK. that was what was going on my wrx and what will go on the fd when it joins the family. sucks they don't offer it wider.

If you can get a 15 inch wheel for less then the worth of the car, and most people I know say that 205s are as big as you can go on the front.

I run 205/60-13 Yoko AVS-Intermediate's on my stock '79 waffle-style rims, and I LOVE THEM. Seriously, I think I paid $3X apiece from the tire rack, and these tires are VERY nice. I haven't had any experience with the Sumi's, but I've heard good things. Don't expect the Yoko's to last long, but with my mostly highway driving I've put about 15-18k (hard to tell, the odo's broken) on them so far and still have 30% tread or so left.

If you've got the scratch for 15's, it becomes a different car. I've heard it's tough to get much more than a 205 under the front without rubbing on something, but you can go quite a bit more in the back with the right rims.

Wow, you're right, Jeremy. If I'd known that a year ago when I bought mine, I would have bought more! I guess that just gives me an excuse to pony up the cash for tires for the 15's when these wear out. Of course, you can't get AVS-I's in 205/50-15 either.
