If it still runs and drives normal then dont worry about it.
Just keep a rebuild in mind for later on down the road.
Or start hunting now for a good deal on engine that way you wont be stuck paying top $$$ because you need one asap.
Feel free to ATF it also and that will let you know if its just a side seal sticking on you.
If the rotor acured any damage though (like detonation) then the pressure force that was created within the combustion chamber could have force the rotor to "smash" its face into one of the walls and that could prevent the seals from moving out at all.
This could have happened before you bought it and could have went un-noticed because at the time the seals where already extended out enough to form a good seal, but as the engine gets worn the spring no longer have enough force to compensate for the pinched track and can not extend the seals out to form a good overall seal, thus allowing leakage of oil at high load and or rpm.

What color was the smoke? white? (aka Fuel?)
Do you run a carbbed 12a?
Were you full throttle or hard on the gas before you let off? If you were then this is normal. Many 1st gens used to do this is autocross. It's just getting rid of the extra gas.
Don't panic and think it needs a rebuild.
