Past basic diagnostics now...HELP!!!!

Been busy this year with work ****, and finally getting the rex back on the road, but the damn thing won't start...

Hot spark on all four plugs....

Gas pumping at about 1 litre (quart) for 10 seconds cranking (Wild *** Guess, not measured)....

Nothing happening....

But the damn thing fires for about 1 or 2 seconds once I disconnect the gas line!

I haven't tried ATF, but I am getting good pressure sounds when the spark plugs are out, and as I say, it does fire when the gas line is disconnected.

Anyone have any thoughts on what to check next?

My prior mechanical knowledge is near-zero, I bought the Rex as a learning experience (plus the fact that I love the look of the beast!). My assumption is that one of the "rats nest" valves is behaving badly, but I don't know how to diagnose it further. Anyone have any suggestions?

Are the plugs wet? Sounds like Flooded engine to me. Push start it.

The plugs are bone dry. I'm assuming its one of the valves in the rat's nest. Any other thoughts?

If the plugs are bone dry somthing has gotten clogged within the Carb. Dry pouring some gas directly in and try to see if it will start. If it does you know the problem is within the Carb.

Yeah, I had that exact problem when I started on my 4-year sitting rex. The guys are right about what to try first, pouring a little gas down the carb. It just needs a trickle, and should run for a few seconds on that.

Now obviously that isn't a permanant fix. We toyed with the idea of tying my friend michel to the hood, cutting a hole and having *him* be our gas pump, but at 100+km/h, we don't think he could hold on enough. All this will do is point the problem towards the carb.

I'd suggest that if you're anywhere near someone who could rebuild your carburetor properly, buy a kit from Victoria British, and get them to rebuild it for ya. I bought a 'new-to-me' carb off someone, and am *still* having problems with it.

It's EFI so couldn't try the gas in the carb <grin>, but I figured for what it took to pop off the front wire, I'd make sure it wasn't flooded...

Started right up...boy do I feel stupid...

Found out why I had the paradox (dry plugs, but "flooded" re-start procedure was working!)

Turns out I had a broken wire (inside the insulation) on the secondary wire running from the front ignition coil to the EFI system.

Also kills the gremlin that was Vacuum or valve problem, I think... although this is an assumption at the minute.

Thanks for all the help, especially the feedback to check something I KNEW was OK.
