what is the purpose of the o2 sensor? what happens if i run without it connected? like when i get a new exhaust and there's no place to plug it in, does it cause any problems?

it tells the engine whether its running rich or lean. you will need to have a muffler shop put a bung in your exhaust. that doesn't sound right does it?

If your car's an -SE, then it won't run. I replaced mine and it made a world of difference. Got rid of the smoke, and a big power increase.

I got a bung from Mazdatrix for my custom header. It's only a nut with one side ground down so that is fits the contour of the exhaust pipe. You could make your own. Drill a hole in the pipe and weld the sucka on. No brainer if you weld.

First off, glad you searched, but you didn't have to post in two threads. As for the location of the O2 Sensor on your 1982... There is no O2 Sensor for the 12A as far as I remember, then again its been quite a while since I looked at the 12A.

If it's carbed (which your 82 probably is), it won't have an oxygen sensor.

Edit: But to add to the question of where to install one, probably right where the exhaust manifold starts turns into a pipe. (before the connection to the catalytic converter or thermal reactor - don't remember which year it changed, but before that point anyway)

That may be the cat temp sensor, not an o2 sensor.

Thanks to all and sorry for the double thread. I am new to the world of Carb and trying to keep an eye out to prevent the engine from going to lean or to rich when I tune the carb. I just removed the Rats Nest and the tuning of the carb is now in effect. Thanks to all for your help.
