I’m just going by page 13 of the Haynes manual. It shows using 20W50 for 15 deg (f) to 120 degrees (f). That pretty much covers my climate, in Ft. Worth, Texas. I also prefer Castrol GTX!

I had always used 20w50 on my old engine before I lost compression. Now that I have a new motor I use 10w40. It is easier to start in the winter due to its thinness. The 20w50 was always kinda sluggish below 40Celc.

8krpm is not enough
I'm running 10w40, castrol GTX, seems to be pretty much the consensus (brand wise) and going by my owners's manual, 10w40 works just fine for me.
--matt
(capacity is about 5 quarts w/ filter, according to the manual I believe)

The stock 12A engine has a 4.9 quart oil capacity. That .1 extra really doesn't matter, so 5 quarts.
Castrol GTX is the oil of choice among these guys. It's non-synthetic, so it will burn, and it's time proven. The grade is up to you and your climate. People suggest running a thick grade of oil (20w50) because thicker oil prevents wear, but at the expense of a little bit of power and some cold starting sluggishness.
The one additive I trust and reccomend is Marvel's Mystery Oil.(Abbreviated here as MMO.) It's instructions say it is both a fuel additive and a lubricant additive. This indicates it burns, which as you may know, the rotary does need to burn some of it's oil. MMO is also time tested and proven it's worthiness. It comes in a bright red bottle. MMO will thin your oil somewhat, so a thicker grade is reccomended. (20W50)
Reccomended dosage, 4 qts 20w50 Castrol GTX and 1 qt MMO every 2500 Miles, and half to three quarters of a quart MMO with every fill up of 87 Octane fuel. (Based on average reccomendations of turstworthy users here.)
