hey guys im stuck in a rutt. my dad is telling me to sell my car, but i like it too much. i live in tennessee and the only thing that is making me sell it is the stupid emissions. now i am a power head and i took off the gslse fuel injection and put a weber on it. is there any way i can pass emissions? what components can i use to pass? if nothing then ill have to sell..

First off look up TN's emissions regulations. I'm assuming TN is like other states where the frist test is free if you fail. Worst case is that you go take the test, bomb it and they tell you how far off you are. Gotta know where you are and where you want to go before you do anything else.

Getting good cats is a must for emissions.

Go ask over in your regional forum there has to be a RotorHead in TN willing to help.

You could try that stuff that guarentees you will pass. Ive never had any experience with it, so i dont know if it works.

I used to live in CT, where a lot of gearheads found neat ways to cheat:

1. Run an exhaust cutout, so only a portion of the exhaust exits at the rear. Some of the newer testing machines will catch this, but it used to work in CT back in the early years.

2. Run a wasted spark ignition system. I'm told this cleans up some of the unburnt HCs.

3. Get a P.O. box in state without emissions testing and register the car there.

Rumor has it that you can up the idle and get similar results. Set it at where you'd be crusing at freeway speeds.

I'd strongly suggest getting it compliant legally and correctly because you'll have to do this again in a year or two.

Put the car up for sale, someone will surely give you a fair price from a non-inspection State. Offer to meet the buyer half way for delivery, this shows you trust the car. Tell your Dad, you need help with your transportation needs and if he wants this car out of the driveway, he needs to help. Then take the $$ you get from the sell and buy another 7 that has been emissions OK'd in Tenn. You may have to pay more for the new 7, but possible less time and $$ than trying to get your current one emissioned.

Have both systems: smog legal and race. Just take a day and bolt on the smog legal to pass the inspection, get your sticker, then remove and bolt up your trick exhaust the following weekend. It's a hassle, but that would work.

I use a Racing Beat Header and Racing Beat dual presilencers exhaust system that bolts directly to my stock muffler-end system. I keep the stock manifold, and bolt-on mid-exhaust (including the catalytic converter) only for inspections. It usually hangs on the wall in the garage, and takes about 2 hours to swap out.

(edit: I use a stock carb / intake, though, and still run my airpump; although, it pumps to nothing. I've never had to pass an emissions test, either, as I live in NC in a county where air emissions are not tested, yet. )

Can you do that without having a driver;s license from that state? If so, I'll just keep getting PA registration.

PA is getting strict on equipment dude, and that would mean you have to inspect it in PA also.

Like a $200 fine if you call that crap. It would be a little better if you had a sticker already and just said darn it, i forgot.

Suggest tuning the carb first... You said it's running rich... That's your first problem...

If you can float the cash, have them tune it with an exhaust gas analyzer... Not only will you pass emissions, you'll get more power and better milage too... Plus, you won't kill your cats if they're working, but if they're not, read on.

High flow 3 way cat... You'll need the air pump for that one, Might need the ACV and related rats nest parts too, not sure. Modern cats are more efficient and flow better than the old pellet style you've got. Again, more power and milage outta that.

Wasted spark system will also help... Again, more power and milage... Search for DLIDFS for setup instructions...

That should pass you for the sniffer, probably not a visual... But if you don't have visuals, then you're good.

The carb adjustment and ignition modification will be the cheapest... Test after doing those and see what happens... The Cat will probably be a couple hundred bucks, so budget accordingly.
