Talking A Supra defector!?

Well I hope my affiliation with the Supra does not get me kicked out of here prematurely. Unfortunately the actions of a few ruin it for us all.. but I think I may be coming full circle on a new car in the future. I have worked on many, many Supras and basically know them like the back of my hand.. especially the 3rd gens. But my dilemna is that I really want/need (okay I guess I really don't NEED it, but you get the point) a smaller, more nimble car to take out to some autoX with my buddies. Since I already have experience in the forced induction area I feel like I can already answer a lot of my questions regarding the FD's. But I still have a few unanswered while I try and decide in my head how I want to build the car.. so hopefully a few of you can shed some light for me.

1. How much power can the stock rotary on an FD contain before some professional building is required?

2. How much power/boost can the stock fuel system handle? And beyond that point what is the usual uprade path? Is it just larger primary injectors.. or are additionals just as easy?

3. And when one gets to the point of upgrading the fuel system/turbo what is commonly used to control the fuel? On the Supra it is either standalone or some HKS goodies like the VPC. The VPC does not apply to the FD as far as I know.. could the Apexi Power FC conceivably control all of this for me?

Ultimately in the end I see the car becoming a single turbo car.. but as we know you have to pay to play, so fundage in the end will determine that for me. I used to have a first gen RX-7 when I was in college and never had so much fun driving a car... I have wanted an FD since the first time I saw one. Thanks for any input... cheers and Happy Thanksgiving.

Hey Matt,

1. It all depends on the health of that stock engine and how it was taken care of. I think it can handle safely ~350 with some reliability mods. It will be very difficult to get there with the stock turbos and stock IC. If you also have power mods you can get alot more with the engine properly tuned.

2. About 13 to 14 psi or about 300 hp, but at that point you need an ECU to correctly fuel the engine; that is considering you have the stock turbos and IC as well. I started with a Fuel Pump, the next will be a Rising Rate Fuel Pressure Regulator. I am seeing 90% injector duty on my PowerFC by redline, so I think that it is also time to upgrade my secondaries to flow more. Most go from an 850cc secondaries to 1200/1300cc injectors. Others that have large singles will go higher, and also increase their primaries, but now were talking about sacrificing around town driving.

3. I am planning on a single sometime down the road; I have 93k on it. So I decided to go with the PowerFC as it will meet the needs of the single setup I am looking for, with ~400 to the wheels. Other options are good standalones such as the Haltech, or Wolf systems. They are more work and I think for what I want, they will be a little overkill. Keep an eye out for a new product that is coming out, someone on this forum is developing a standalone ECU, similar to the PowerFC, with AEM.

Since you live in sunny So Cal, you are close to XS Engineering, so if you did decide to go with a PFC, they can dyno tune it for you.

The best thing you can do is take the time to find the right car to start with.

Good luck.
