Doesn't really sound that bad to me. A bit of popping while reving the engine is pretty normal. Carb could have a bit of gunk in it. How does it run under load, ie accelerating in gear? If it pulls like it always has just try of bit of sea foam.

Start with the ignition system, then the fuel system. If you were pushing the go pedal hard or most of the way to the floor, then something is wrong. If you still have cats, that's the 3rd item to check.

hey your engine sounds kind of like mine did when the shutter valve was not working because my engine fuse was blown thus all of my emissions and vacuum ports were not on.

check out my thread/video https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...4&postcount=12

also check out mazdatrix's faq to troubleshoot the shutter valve http://mazdatrix.com/faq/shutter.htm

also do not rule out vacuum leaks. a small leak might have your engine still able to idle but will cause it to idle rough

good luck! post up your findings even if you havent solved your problem yet

Mine has had a bit of a 'sneeze' for a couple years now, though it really only shows up for me at idle & warmup.

Didn't even prevent it from passing smog. Current working theory is mech wear in the dizzy allowing timing jitter on the lead side.

Recently got a second dizzy to play with once it's cleaned up.

Its probably that 80 electronic ignition and dizzy doing that. If you slip in an FB
dizzy and redo your ignition (DLDFIS, TFIDFIS, MSDDFIS etc) it will sound a lot
better. It also depends on the timing you run as well.
