Music System

I am in the process of buying things to upgrade the music system in my 1982 GSL RX-7. I was wondering a few things, stock speaker sizes and aftermarket amp locations. I want to upgrade the speakers and from what I have gathered its 4" in the front and 6.5" in the rear is that correct? Also I plan on running a subwoofer sometime soon so I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for where to mount the amplifier. Any help would be awesome.

When I'm done with building the 82 I will tackle the stereo. I won't go too crazy with it but I will install a small powered subwoofer on the floor behind the passenger seat and I'll use a compact 4 channel amplifier with at least 600w positioned on the space between the storage bin door and the floor..... with a set of two ways and a set of components...still deciding on the radio ........all that after upgrading to a 2nd gen alternator....

That's the classic setup for these cars. Big amp under or behind one of the seats. Make it a 5 or 6 channel dep on your sub setup. Remove one of the storage bins and put a sub enclosure in there. I would use separates up fron with wahtever midrange thing fits in the 4" stock location and whack some pointable tweeters onto the A pillars.

@chuyler1 did a really nice setup in his FB, https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread.../#post12251767

crutchfield.com can tell you exactly what you need.

and if you are upgrading from an OEM stereo, you will have to redo all the wiring. You should spend more on the front 4 inch speakers than the rear. My 1983 took 4 inch front, and 5 1/4 inch rear. I spent ~$100 on the head unit, and ~$100 on the speakers. but that's without a sub woofer a subwoofer.

I have 4 inch kickers with tweeters in the front 6 inch ones in the back a capacitor to keep the voltage alright 2 amps both kenwood 500 watt one for voice one for the bass. I use a 8 inch bazooka enclosure with a mtx sub inside . Sounds great . The closure of the back of the Rx7 just makes the bass just better it’s like a sub box inside a box . Weird to explain but it sounds great oh and a very old alpine 7 inch flip out .

every OEM connection crumbles, and the OEM wire is super tiny. If your head unit is recent, connectors are universal, in that all head units had the same wiring, and you can just plug it right in.

Sealed aluminum enclosure with sound deadener. The sub is an 8" Alpine, driven by a dedicated Alpine amp. The speakers are JBL coaxials in the stock locations, driven by a 4 channel Alpine amp. Sounds OK -- bass is deep and very accurate, but the mids and highs don't sound as realistic as those in my benchmark OEM setup (Cadillac CTS with Bose system).
