Im wanting to upgrade the speaker system in my '90 GXL. To put it bluntly, Im retarded when it comes to stereo stuff, basically because I dont care all that much about it. But... its getting to me, the car has absolutely no bass, the speakers all crackle, etc. I dont want anything crazy, just want it to sound like a new cars system. I am using a stock CD/Tape deck, and would like to keep that. I just want to upgrade the speakers. If I were to just run some good 8" speakers in the rear towers, and upgrade all the door, underdash speakers, would that do the trick, or does the problem lie somewhere else? I want to keep this as simple as possible. Also, any suggestions for speakers would be helpful.

Probably the best solution would be to run new 5.5" or 6.5" in the front and/or rear. I'd run them with an amp which isnt too muc work to do at all. I dont think s4's can fit 6.5" up front though. Dont bothere changing the underdash speakers. You can find some nice component speakers for the front that come with tweeters too.

I'll give you an idea of my old sound system. Infinity kappas 6.5" components in the front and Kappa 6.5" 2 way speakers in the rear. Sounds were very clear and I had them running to a old rockford fosgate amp. I also had an infinity basslink (self powered sub) in the rear. For the front and rear speakers + basslink it was under $500 shipped. If you just get the speakers it'll be about half that with a used amp that you can find. This setup was very nice and cost effective.

That's a VERY GOOD advice, I would only change the rear speakers in favor of SAS Bazooka 8 inch wired in MONO to 4 channel amp you mentioned, and scratch the amp woofer

Iv got the same question, mines a 89 gxl, running stock tape deck, and keeping it. What size speakers do I need? I would like them to fit without any modifieing, or at least cutting. Just lookin for a bolt in really. What kind do I need, explain 2 way, 3 way ect.. I do not want to run an aftermarket amp. Thanks, sorry to kinda hijack your thread

In a case like yours, since you want a bolt in speaker, I would go thru crutchfield.com, they will sell you a direct bolt in speaker, or will provide the bracket, they even have the wire connectors, so no cutting or crimping is needed.

Two way speaker is a woofer and a tweeter
Three way is a woofer, a "mid" and a tweeter

Not much difference between the two and definetly not worth the extra cost, IMHO. Hell I wouldn't even invest in a two way speaker!

i'm in the same situation..no rear speakers, no radio, no cd player. I removed the CD player in my AE and was gunna get it installed into the daily driver 7.

i would get 6.5'' speakers up front in the doors and if you want a tweeter to i would suggest the infinity 6.5'' 6000cs 270 watts i have them and they are great dont sound bad on the stock head unit and amp but they would sound real good with a small aftermarket amp and for rears maybe another set of 6.5'' speakers and wire them up to the amp to and it wouldnt cost to much for this setup and you will have a good system with the stock look

Infinity Kappa 102a amplifier
Infinity Referrence 5.25" 2-way speakers

Rear:
Infinity Kappa 102a amplifier
Infinity Kappa 6.5" component speakers (rear)

Subs:
Infinity Kappa 202a
(2) Infinity Referrence 1020W 10" subs in custom kick plates

Misc:
Lots of 4 gauge power wire, distribution blocks and a .5 ferrad capacitor

I got all 3 amps off ebay for ~$100 or so each shipped. The speakers are also available on ebay for a reasonable price or there is always crutchfield.

You want better bass? Run an amp and a set of 8" subs in the rear shock towers. Replace the fronts with some quality components and you will love it later.

Right now I have a sony in-dash minidisc recorder with two factory replacement 6x9 spkrs and i'm actually happy with it. I'm just waiting to do the S5 interior swap before I get any more speakers/amp and whatnot...

I usually hear and see people installing component speakers in the front. Any advantage to running them in the rear?

I'm one of those people that needs help picking what to go in, but have no problems installing it and wiring it myself. When I picked up the TII, I installed a Sony CDX-F5700 (the basic MP3 capable deck), but haven't bothered to upgrade the speakers yet. Which it could really use.

hey i swapped the sound system in my 90 gxl to a stock sytem out of a parts car i purchased for $ 45 ---85/86?rx7 not sure wich... anyways it had individual clarion amps on every speaker, head unit was clarion tape deck/radio...it sounded awsome, then i got the idea to put two 6" jl audio w3 subs in rear tower with cd changer..... couldnt be happier, great bass great sound all around...

Seriously, I don't recomend speakers on the rear at all, unless the customer is going with a DVD player, and intends to watch a lot os movies on the car. Other than that, why would you wan't speakers on the rears? When you go to a concert, do you face the singer, or the rear?

Rear speakers ruin imaging and staging, basically you want to create as real as possible the real way we listen to music. Why spend an extra $100 on rear speakers? when you can use that $$$ on an amp, better front speakers, better head unit, X-over, eq, or a sub!

maybe they like surround sound? I think it'd be cool to be surrounded by the singer IMO. But what ever floats your boat, you do have some good points..but if you got the xtra cash to spend on rear speakers i would. I personally, in my AE have upgraded front speakers/tweets with a lil 2 channel amp in the compartment box behind the driver side w/ a lil 12" JL sub in the rear.

If you are looking for a surround sound effect, that is cool; however you won't be getting it from two full range speakers in stereo on the rears. It really don't work like that, home theater system have the ability to create that effect, control the rear sound delay, etc.

Setting up two full range stereo speakers on the back, won't create that effect, not to mention that theres no control of it all. On a car, you want to imitate the real life, get on the car, crank the volume, and close your eyes; the feeling should be same as if you were in a concert, or play.

HOWEVER, you said it, people DO have different tastes

dont wanna highjack, but everyone else is, so fuggit.

i have an alpine head unit, 4" infinity reference speakers up front, and 6.5" alpine type s speakers in the rear. the lack of bass is killing me. i do not want a sub box floating around in my hatch. would putting 8" speakers in the back give me at least SOME bass?

also, the pass. side rear speaker has blown twice. the driver side one is still fine. is the old wiring the cause of this?

my speaker system is kinda "eh" even after upgrading the rear speakers to 6.5" Infinity Reference Speakers, I'm Running a Pioneer Detachable face tape deck hooked up to a Pioneer 12 Disk Cd Changer and i've got crppy speaker up front and the reference ones in back and a shitty JVC amp hiding under my driver's seat, i'd liek to see where people have mounted their better speaker up front, and the good places people have managed to put subs, a.k.a not a box and not in the bins! haha i guess this is the official stereo thread

I upgraded my speakers in back to Nice speakers, still sounded like crap, found out each speaker has a seprate amp, and they still crackled. the amps suck too, just remember that before you run more powerfull speakers, you need to run new amps to the back also with the speakers, what i did was used the remote power wire from the old amps so i didnt have to take the stock stereo apart. Ran newer amp off the remote, then ran main positive to bat, grounded the neg to the frame. used the old speaker wires for a high input to the amps and it was on, never touched the original stereo at all ..
