Looking for audio advice.
Hey everyone,
I am still relatively new to the RX-7 scene. I bought an '83 LE about 3 months ago after about a year of research. One thing I would like to know more about (and I guess this isn't really RX-7 specific) is the audio system. I bought my car with an "upgraded" sound system. It consists of a Pioneer head unit that goes for about $100 right now ( don't have the specs handy, will post those later), and 2 Volfenhag speakers in boxes in the back. I would really like to upgrade this so that I can play my music somewhat loud without distortion, but I really don't know much about audio systems. Could you guys please tell me what I would need for a good system that would fit my needs? My current setup distorts too much for my taste at higher volumes. Also, is there an upgrade that works well to improve radio reception? Mine is kind of spotty. Thanks alot.

it may just be a matter of getting better speakers. never heard of those. and then a modest amp that wont over power them. depending on the specs of the pioneer, it may be a keeper for now, unless ur looking for ipod capabilities. if it has an aux input on the front, then u can use an ipod. all u need is the cord with the male plugs on each end. what size is the speakers and is that the only ones? the front stock location takes 4" and the rear takes 6.5, and possibly 6.75. then there's the sub if u want that. it quite possible the distortion ur getting may be from the head unit and not the speakers. look up the specs on all u have then go from there. if the speakers r of any decent quality, adding an amp might get u what ur looking for.
^exactly.
Start by taking out the boxes with the old speakers in them and put new speakers in the factory spots then add amps and subs from there to your liking.

This is my audio and I love it. I didn't want to add the weight of a sub and an amp to power it, on top of the fact that there's very little trunk space to begin with. With this system I can crank the deck to max and it's still clear. With the Alpine deck I also have an IPod hookup so I have pretty much done away with needing CD's. Some high power component speakers up front and decent 3-ways in the rear with an amp that can provide suitable power will be more than enough for you to enjoy without breaking the bank.

How much are you willing to spend? and when looking at speakers, rms wattage is more important than peak wattage. As long as the headunit/amp and the speakers have close to the same ams wattage rating, it wont distort.
some stereo's get rather dismal reception - it's not always dependent on the antenna. i had a stereo that wouldn't get FM for anything, and the current one in one of my cars seems to get amazing reception.
