I bought my car with an older RB setup. At first, I thought it was just the header, as the rest of the system looked like rusting junk. I now know it is all RB, but before too long I'm going to have to replace most of it as it is falling apart. Wish I knew how old that setup really was. I'd like to go with something more open, so maybe it's time to check out Magnaflow...

BTW, this is a good post. Really opens my eyes a bit, and confirmed a theory or two for me. Got a friend with a stock setup, and his seems to have more power all around than mine. The only plus--mine sounds better. I'll trade the sound for the performance any day.

I was thinking the same thing. I had the same streetport system and mine was most certainly a straight through. I checked. They must have had different mufflers for different systems or at the very least changed designs at some point.

 

I've got a 50 Series FM on my 83. It souns pretty nice not that loud compaired to the other vehicles that I've got, I'd consider it "streetable". I'm going to add another dual in/out where the factory muffler is just to see/hear what happens (the one on there now is where the cats used to be).

From the few posts I've seen nobody's tried the Flowmaster on a rotary and from what I've tried/heard its a pretty nice outcome, I'd do it again if I had another that needed exhaust work.

Oh and it only cost about $50; $45 for the 50 Series and $5 for the piping.

Sounds like rice, and lasts a year max. One of my local members has gone through three in two years, so I'd say they're crap. They also SOUND like crap.

 

so what's the price of a magnaflow system? do they just make mufflers?

nope, magnaflow doesn't have a system for the 7, it's gonna be a custom job... After all that's been said, I think I'm still gonna get a rb muffler (after i get a new job) because my car is fairly loud as is, that's with a rb header, bonez cat, and stock muffler...

I just did a custom 2.25" Magnaflow exhaust on my 12A. Sounds awesome and opened it up real nice. I've noticed quite a difference in power from 6-8000rpm. I thought about and RB system, but it I decided against it for a few reasons: didn't like the design of their muffler, would have cost too much to have shipped up here to Canada, and also I needed a cat to pass emissions.

actually, me being in california, i needed a cat too, so i picked up some flanges from rb and a bonez cat and had a custom piece made, so that i can connect the rb header to the stock exhaust. Every bolts on and off and uses stock gaskets. Now i just need a upgrade muffler...

 

Flowmaster themselves do not recommend their mufflers be used on rotaries.

 

Flowmasters cost a lot of power on boingers, too, relative to noise reduction.

 

i had on my old gslse turbo a magnaflow muffler as presilencer plus i had a mindtrain exhaust and it was quiet up to 4K RPM and the wastegate started opening on my turbo but still was not as loud as my old 30 bucks fart cannon and my dinomax muffler that i was using as presilencer.

 

nope not true.

you can run dual medium sized resonator (any brand) or just a single largest resonator leading to your $20 ebay muffler. it works well and holds up to heat. don't tell me the turbo honda guys that run a ghetto ebay muffler does not produce just as much heat as rotaries do.

some people just need to think outside of the box.. that's all.

 

I, for one, like the RB exhaust I hung on Pamela. Had a great sound and definately decreased restriction over stock. Tips looked great too.

To those of you saying you watched a video and didn't like the sound, most cars sound like crap on video. Judge it by how it sounds driving by you, or when you're in a car with that setup, rather than a compressed video file recorded by a camera with a built-in mike

 

err the rotary exhaust is a good 400 degrees hotter than the piston engine exhaust, this has been well documented in various rotary engine papers, now stfu noob :P

 

i think he was comparing a turbo pissed-on, to a na rotary, still wouldnt trust some crap ebay muffler who knows what type of packin it uses,

I have a custom setup on my 7. I do not know the brand of muffler they used on my car. It fits nicely and replaces the old muff nicely! There is much nicer sound too! It is deeper and i have noticed a increase in power.

 

I too have a custom exhaust on my 7. a magnaflow performance exhaust was used. it sounds good, i have two glass pipes in total to supress the sound, but it still sounds kinda loud, i have to let off the throttle when passing by cops. oh yea, a pretty big power increase from 3k rpm and up

 

i was told glass packs made your car louder..... because i got laughed at when saying instead of a rpesilencer i would use a glass pack....is this wrong

 

yes it will be louder with a glasspack and it will probably burn up too.

 

Glass has a lower resonating frequency, making the note louder and a bit deeper.

 

rotorlutionlist made it sound like he is using them to make his car quite down....... would it still burn up even using it at the rear axle with this amount of distance from the engine brut force? i know i have burned myself on the RB tips and i only started my car idled for 2min and reved up to 3grand a few times then turned it off and boy was it hot back there!!!

im looking at going towards a ebay cannon...just for the fact, and i know this that the RB muffler holds back alot since i have done runs on my side roads with and without it on and the RB holds ALOT back around midrange accel.... and i dont mind going deff but dont want it too loud to bug others around me since i got a few angry comlaints when running open headers a few days...

 

Too bad Rotary Engineering isn't around anymore. I have their full exhaust ( headers, pipes, muffler ) on my 80 GS since the early 90s. Its got a great sound and is pretty open. Uses two stainless steel packed (I think) silencers inline between the headers and the backpipe to the muffler to help mellow out the sound. They look like glasspack bullets basically.

Back when I got that I compared it with the RB package of the day and it was a better buy with better flow. I got my Dellorto from RB at the same time along with some under drive duel pulleys. To this day that setup is still there and working fine. Although I had to rebuild the Dell lately. I'm kind of dreading the day I have to redo the exhaust again, but until then it works.
