Question Non RB exhaust system Q

I've been doing a lot of searching on replacement exhaust system, but everyone just says Racing Beat, Racing Beat, Racing Beat.... Well, unfortunately I can't go with RB system because A. I neeed to pass emissions and B. I don't have that much $$$.

The reason for replacing everything is that the previous owner had removed the large cat, and I have had the engine back fire really hard a few times lately and blow out the remains of the smaller cat as well as what was left of my muffler. A friend was following me and he said sparks were flying everywhere. So basically I got a straight pipe now and its stupidly loud, more power for sure, but so loud I need to wear ear plugs if I'm going to be driving for any longer than 10 mins

So my question is, is there anything special about a rotary exhaust system?

I'm thinking of replacing the stock multi-catalytic converter setup with a simgle generic 3-way high flow cat (would it need to have the air pump plumbed into it somewhere?), and then running a half decent muffler like a Magnaflow. I was thinking 2.5" but should I go bigger? or do rotaries need some back pressure like boingers do? This is on a stock NA 12A

Would this work? or is there another relatively cheap and emmissions legal system?

That setup should work fine. The cat will have a nipple that they can connect the Air pipe to.

Now what size should I do? 2.5" from the header back? bigger all around, or?

definately no bigger than 2.5. Its a matter of preference really. I would probably go with the 2.5 myself since more than likely it will be pinched down closer to 2 at a bend. I think my exhaust might be pinched down close to 2 at the presilencers but it still flows plenty well for an n/a 13b. For the muffler if you don't want racing beat I would say definately magnaflow but when I was doing the comparison they seemed to be pretty close in price.

If you are still going to have the stock manifold, there is little gain from going over 2.25" pipe. The manifold will be the most restrictive part of the system with 2.5".
Any cat will need the air pump to be hooked up, or it will not live very long as high flow......

With exception to some of the newer cats that don't need air being pumped through them.

So just get the Racing Beat streetable exhaust system. It has an O2 sensor bung and you can hook up a grey market cat to it. Use the stock connecting pipe to a powerpulse muffler and call it done.

Well, I ended up getting a generic hi-flow cat and a magnaflow muffler. I looked at the 2.5" stuff and it was huge, so I Went with 2.25 for everything. Gonna have the local muffler shop get it all installed saturday. Might try and get them to make the cat removable so I can replace it with a peice of straight pipe until I need to go through emmisions testing.

Yes, please do.
I know what my 2.25 stainless pipe with a powertech stainless muffler sounds like. Slightly loud, but livable. My buddies SA with 2.25 pipe and a flowmaster sounds rather odd, loud, and not as livable. He was disappointed, cause he was aiming for a little quieter than mine, and ended up with a tinny, loud system, rather than the deep throaty tone from mine.

Will do.

I have a feeling its going to sound a little too 'ricey' for me, but I wanted something freeflowing and its tough to find a quiet hi-flow muffler...

But then again anything will be better than the stright pipes I got on there now -- although it is pretty funny to watch people jump when I back off the throttle quick and it backfires hard

just got it installed. Sounds Awesome! I'm really impressed. Not too loud unless I get on it, then you know its there.

I'd definitely recomend Magnaflow to anyone looking for a performance straight through muffler. I went with the sing 2.25 in with dual outlets and the turned up tips. Suits the car really nicely.

Seems to have opened it up a little more than it was before. I used to have 2" pipe with the front 2 cats and a stockish muffler. This stuff was all basically blown out because of a couple bad backfires so it was pretty open and free. But now I only have the very front pre-heater cat, a nice 3 way high flow 2.25" cat, and the magnaflow muffler.

And the best part is that I passed aircare (emmissions) with flying colours!!
