How do the rear calipers work?

So I read through various brake threads and I havent seen one yet that covers what I am wondering.

I have an 85 GSL for starters.

Was going to replace rear discs and pads today and took one side off (other side, pivot bolt is seized to caliper).

To get the piston to compress back in do you have to rotate it? Becuase if you take it apart there is a threaded rod which ismoved by the park brake mechanism. Front calipers you just squeeze the piston back in place so you can slide it over the larger newer pads.

Next question. Are they self adjusting. and how does that work with the hand brake rod thing?

If im just an idiot and missed the thread that covers this please point me to it.

Thanks in advance

you have to rotate it clockwise but I highly recommend using the right tool instead of a large channel lock or whatever. When you install it, be sure to use a fine grit sand paper or vice versa to remove corrosion on the slider as well as the 14mm bolt and be sure to apply a dab of grease prior to installation.

well, it works just like the front caliper so its self adjusting. There is a level on side for the handbrake cable. if its mechanical/fluid control, I cant tell you. I accummulated so many parts that I havent had the opportunity to rebuilt one.

They've got these cube things you can get at the autostore for about $10, they have several surfaces one of which will fit the rear caliper pistons. Then you crank it back with a ratchet. Lack Wacky says, way easier than wacking on it.

And yep they are self adjusting. They just are, you don't need to wonder how.

buy this kit from harbor freight. Works well for front calipers also.

Make sure you loosen the bleeder nipple. Makes it much easier to turn the piston back in.

I've always just used a pair of pointy nose pliers to turn the piston.
