Stalling, loss of power.

Okay I tried a search for this....but I'm not sure how to word it so it came up with nothing helpful.

1984 RX7 GS 85,000 miles no rebuild. (to my knowledge)

Problem number 1. Im not sure if this only happens because the car isn't fully warmed up (I'm in washington state....it's a bit nippy), but when i put the car into gear and hit the gas pedal.....the car stalls. But this only happens like....once. I restart the car...then drive off. What causes this? And can i fix it?

Problem 2. Happened as of recently. It feels like my car is "holding back", if i were to say.....floor it in gears 3 to 4. It almost seems like it wants to go faster but it makes an odd motion that I can feel. Anyone know what I'm talking about? My mechanic says that the exhaust system I have is basically suffocating the car.....not sure how accurate that is and to what extent, but any other insight?

Is it a stock exhaust system with the cats still? I'd check to see if the cas are possibly clogged. Do you just start it and go or do you let it warm up? I'm realy picky, so most of the time I will let my SA warm up all the way before I go anywhere. If I just start it and try and go it's very hard going and it doesn't want to move. When was the last tune up?

Not completely warmed up....i get impatient. The 2nd problem is present even after it's been driven and warmed up. Clogged cat? I know the cat was bought aftermarket, previous owner told me. From what I understand the car has had a fairly recent tune-up, possibly within the last 3k miles.

Let it completely warm up one day and see what it does. Check to see if the cat is broken up or not. Asside from that, make sure it has the proper spark plugs in it and the carb isn't clogged as well

Okay, I was looking into getting the racing beat exhaust system....however (this is gonna sound noob) does it have a cat in the system? Isn't a cat required by law?

depends on if they do emissions testing in your area. NO RB exhaust does not have cats in it.

Technically tampering with factory emissions equipment is illegal but unless you have emissions in your area you'll be okay

If you haven't already done so, replace the fuel filter. It only a few dollars and a little gas down your sleeves. The symptoms you describe could be fuel starvation as well as exhaust restriction.

RB exhaust system is my top choice also, but if you have a clogged cat(alytic converter) and need a cheap fix the "Main cat race pipe" sold by Rotary Performance works great. It replaces the stock multi cat system with straight pipe and a free-flowing presilencer. They also have the Bonez cat for those who need to pass emissions.

I have an RB system on 3 of my cars and the RP cat replacement pipe on another 2. I have too many cars.

As far as the stalling goes. If you have the choke pulled out and it is working properly then there is no way it should stall.

Do you have an Automatic or 5 speed transmission?

No, blue smoke isn't oil leaking, it's oil burning, as it is supposed to do

But If I see the smoke...that's bad...right? I'm not quite sure what you're getting at.

Where is the smoke coming from? If it's the exhaust it's normal, just burning the oil that's injected into the motor. Mine smokes on cold starts, but mine has 10w30 in it that's probably got a bunch of fuel in it.

hmm..well...for the rb system..dont worry about it..if you dont do stupid stuff..then its not gonna matter..the rb muffler quiets it down a lot..trust me...and with the stalling...let it warm up...i used to have it bog down..after right after it warms up...just be patient..warm up the car..and keep your foot near the gas..and when the temp is about an 1/8 of the way up..its almost warmed up...then you can catch it if it decides to bog...

If the smoke is from under the hood, you need to pin point where it is coming from. It may be a serious issue, it may not.

Very nice post. First to suggest fuel filter, which should have the obvious choice.

For your oil leak, start by looking at the Oil Metering Pump. This is located on the front of the engine, down low, on the passenger side. There will be a linkage rod running from the carb to the OMP. These are pretty prone to leaking. Good luck.
