Help with starting...
Aloha all,
not sure if this is the right place to be on the boards, as it is kind of a general question.
I have a 83 RX7...been driving it well for 3 years...and went on six weeks vacation...and now the car won't really start...it gives some noices and a backfire...and also with a startercable it didn't really work...(these were all tried by my friends who had my car parked for those six weeks...)...I am going there on Saturday to check it out...any sugeestions as what to do or to bring...
Thanks
Christian

You probably need to deflood. Take the plugs out, turn the motor over to blow any fuel out, clean the plugs, and put them back in and try again. If it still wont start check all the basics. Are you getting Spark? Fuel? Compression? What symptoms is it showing? Does it just crank and not start? Does it even sound like it's trying to start?

it is trying to start...I read somewhere that you could put something in the carburator...
(How do you turn the engine over...litterally, or is it a technical term?)
it is warm here, so no cold weather, battery is new, so is starter and alternator is 2 years old...

When deflooding, you need to shut off the fuel pump, you can do this by pulling the engine fuse from the fuse block under the dash. Plugs must be clean and dry before attempting a restart. If you have access to a sand/bead blaster, that works great. Then clean up the plugs with brake cleaner and blow dry with compressed ait. Puring a capfull of motor oil down each barrel of the carb prior to restart will help build compression back up.
When pumping the excessive fuel out of the combustion chambers, hold the gas pedal to the floor for max air flow into the carb. Be sure to disable the spark while doing this. Removing the rotor from the dizzy is the easiest way to do that. No need to add extra gas to the carb when trying to restart, it may compound the flooding issue.
Be sure you have good spark on all 4 plugs. If you have not replaced the dizzy cap, rotor or spark plugs for a while, this may be a good time to do it. Also check that you have adequate fuel flow, when was the last time you changed the fuel filter?
Welcome to the forum and the Darkside. In my sig line is a link to the online FSMS, carb manual and other rotary rlated reading materials. Enjoy and good luck with getting it started.

My experience is if the rx-7 floods it can wash oil off the rotors and compression is insufficient as the seal is lost. Yoiu can burn out ten starters and the engine will not start. Pull a spark plug for each rotor. Crank to blow out excess fuel (if any). Squirt in about 1/2 oz. oil in each rotor. Plugs back in. Start as usual.
I have also found that pushing to about 35 mph creates enough centrifugal force to restore rotor seal to start.
