Gear box adjustment

I have an 85 gl and i have about 1/6th of my steering floats how do i adjust the slop or do i need to suck it up and put a new gearbox in it

Won't find a new box, only used. You can adjust the slop but must be careful not to over adjust it or it will wear prematurely. I'm assuming you are talking about steering and not the transmission.

You will need two wrenches to manouver the lock nut and adjuster on the box. Adjust it by turning the adjuster one flat at a time until it feels tighter. Also it’s easy to change the oil. It’s just gear oil and doesn’t hold much. Oil change may or may not make an improvement in feel.

If steering box has never been adjusted,a PROPER adjustment and changing the 33yr old fluid to synthetic will make a noticeable difference.
Recommend you 1st verify all steering components are tight,any play in idler,pitman arms and tie rod linkage aggravate and exaggerate steering wheel play. Front end alignment also a factor.
