So I dropped the $10 on the Atkins speedometer gear seal o ring..
The thing arived , and I went to swap it..
the O-ring is not only bigger in inner circumference than the original. But is also apparently 3/4 thinner. Clearly the wrong seal.. .
Has any one ever replaced this seal on a 79?
Dissapointed in Atkins.
Bought one froM Atkins, was clearly not the right o ring I bought an o ring to spec, it didn't fit ( too tight) , I sanded it down a bit, slid in by hand got stuck 3/4th in, and now i can't pull it out don't want o push it in and damage the gear assembly.. I really need help, can't drive my car like this, can't get it out ..
The o-ring likely rolled and is bound up. When you install something with an o-ring, you need to make sure the o-ring is lubricated before installation. This prevents binding and ensures a good seal.
You may want to try spraying some silicone spray up in there since you have a gap. Anything slippery like WD40 may even work if you don't have silicone spray handy. It should help the unit slide out.
long story short, I made my own gasket after atkins sent me theirs , the part with the threads came loose when tightening the cap and i said " whatever" and bolted it in, i drove the car about 100 ft, head grinding turned back, got home and that's when i made this post, I decided to **** it and yanked the part out bt the speedo gear prong, it came out with ease, but i damaged the speedo gear tube, irrelevant because my speedometer gear itself is chewed up decently.
I am now in need of a speedometer gear for a 79-80
