First gen vin number database out there?

So I was doing some searching on my 85 and tried finding a collection of owners and build dates with serials but can't seem to find one but there's gotta be something out there right? I think mines a very late build date for the fb body and would like to see how late she was off the line before the 2nd gen rolled out. The last digits are 900310. Any ideas? Thanks guys!

Paging j9fd3s....

I know the fiches list VIN/month build info.

Really, the doorjamb sticker SHOULD have the build date on it. My '81 was a very early FB build, in IIRC September 1980. My '84 was also a very early Series 3, built in September '83 with the 3.933 rearend. (And yes, it had big axles.)

Random thought.

If your car was built in Feb. 1984 or earlier, it is now older than the bombing of Hiroshima was when your car was built.

All three of my Mazdas (''84, '81, and '73 RX-3) are closer to the destruction of the city that inadvertently led to Mazda's growth as a company in general and adoption of the Wankel engine in particular, than to today. (Kenichi Yamamoto sought employment at what would become Mazda because it was one of the few places left in the city to work)

The build date is on the sticker in the door jamb as peejay stated. Now if we're talking about a registry, there isn't one as of yet on the forum. I have one here on the forum for the 1988 10th Anniversary RX-7's. Easy to maintain that one as there were only 1500 produced and we have less than 300 in the registry.

If you guys want, we can start and SA and FB registy. We can do it sequentially by model year just like my other registry. I can start it and maintain it.

The parts fisches for SA's and 81-83 cars do have a S/N breakdown by month of manufacture. Not sure if 84/85 fisches have something similar. Don't remember where I saw this, but I saved it for future reference.

According to the above, S/N 900310 was never built! But there is also a gap in the chart, it doesn't list any production #'s in June or July of 85.

Mazda still has a database that goes back this far, although if a car hasn't been active for a long time they can fall out.
the newest/latest vin i know about is 911569, which was a K3 Silver over Red Cloth GSL, it was built 7/18/1985.

here is the fun part, the FC starts 5/21/1985, so production overlaps.

i don't have very complete records for 1985, they made a LOT of cars about 300 a day. 900310 would be somewhere between late February and early March of 1985 though. if you like shoot me a PM with the vin and i can run it

Production also overlaps between S1 and S2, and S2 and S3.

I also have an extremely early 1979 VIN SA22C501679 (3/78)

so we learned something. the vin came back as a GL RP model, wtf is that. we know that P is manual transmission, why P is a manual i have no idea, but it is. even today. if it was Auto they use A
but what is a GL R? i had looked for one of my old cars, unsuccessfully (this one, https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread...warned-812400/), and there was another GL RP on the list, and it was a leather interior
so GL = GSL, but what is R?

so i asked, and R seems to be power steering. if no PS, its a GSL P...

Mazda's method for filling out the database was really derpy in the 80's, the car had all of the info in it, and then when the car was sold the DEALERSHIP was supposed to fill out the papers and MAIL it back to Mazda USA and then Mazda USA would put it in the database. given that process, the data is pretty good, but there are holes.... nowadays the only info the dealer provides is the selling date

Trivia: Almost every Series 3 GSL I've seen had power steering, and base interior. I think this is because it was the cheapest way to get power steering.

My 1985 came with auto, leather, and power steering. It now has a manual trans and cloth seats but retains the power steering.

I just thought of something... my car also had power windows. Could that be something as well? Or did all gsl models have power windows?

I think all GSLs had power windows as part of the base GSL package.

All GSL trim levels came with GS standard equipment and added power windows, a rear wiper, aluminum wheels, cruise control, removable sunroof, and rear disc brakes as standard equipment.

That makes sense. My 82 gsl also had power windows but instead of cloth it had the leather seats.

Leather was an option in the GSL surprisingly. From 81-85, the GSL came standard with cloth seats. Magazine reviews of the cloth interior were very favorable and I think a lot of the early cars had cloth over leather. I think I see more of the S3 GSL cars with leather interior. Those leather seats were remarkable for comfort.

My 85 GSL-SE I bought from the original owner came with leather seats and they were absolutely gorgeous, and comfortable, as you mentioned. Thick bolsters with an adjustable lumbar support really held you in the seat, unfortunately after twenty + years of sliding down into the drivers seat led to wear-and-tear on the seat back bolster and eventual splitting of the hide. I used some burgundy colored sheepskin seat covers for a few years until I was able to have them recovered in 2007, but the leather used to redo the seats is nice but nowhere near a nice as the original seats.

I would love to get my hands on some s3 leather seats. My 82 had leather but they don't look anywhere near as gorgeous as the s3 seats.

The S2 lesther seats were really nice and they were comfortable. The cloth seats in the GSL were also fantastic. The early materials just didn't hold up as well as the later S3 materials unfortunately.

Leather seats were first introduced in the RX-7 in 1980 in the Leather Sport trim level. Those seats were the same seats that were in the S2 GSL. Again comfortable, but not S3 Leather comfortable. Mazda really outdid themselves with those leather seats. Racing Beat does sell replacement seats covers which should help if you were to find a set for your car. I've also hears amazing things about lseat.com. they stock leather for our cars and it's very reasonably priced: https://www.lseat.com/products/1979-...ers-front.html
