FB Fuel Pump help.

Hello everyone. I found an RX7 I want but it needs a fuel pump. I can find an OEM 12A GSL fuel pump for $140. But, I can find one for an 83 for $60 or $70. I want to know what will fit. I don't think the guy knows if it is a 4-port or a 6-port, it is a carb. What other fuel pumps will fit for under $100, and if possible, under $70 or $60. Thanks a lot to anyone who helps, I am just tired of searching and searching with nothing but failure.

To answer one of your questions, if it is a carb, 12A it will be a 4 port (6 port 12A did not come stock in rx-7's in the US).

The fuel pump for the 83 carb should be the same as the one for the 85 carb. Rock auto does list an exact match to the stock pump for $150. If you can get an equivalent for cheaper, give it a try. There is aftermarket Carter pumps you can buy, but you will need a regulator. The bypass system in the Nikki carb is very easy to overpower with too much pressure.

Go aftermarket (Holley/Carter/Mallory/Summit knockoff)! Listen to Sgt.....get a regulator. Stock fuel pumps are just barely up to the task of supplying fuel under "normal" driving conditions....add a little performance driving and your carb will be strarving!

it's a good deal. all the fb pump r bout the same except for the gslse which will be a higher pressure pump for the efi. if u get an aftermarket pump u'll need a regulator to bring the pressure down to bout 4lbs.

With a stock nikki you are going to want 3-3.5 lbs. Sterling has said 4 lbs is too much, IIRC.

Thanks guys. I had no clue about the 12a, carb, 4-port thing. Makes me feel like a beginner. Oh well. Does any body have a picture of the FB fuel pump assembly? Again, thank you very much.

If I were to use an FD pump and a regulator, would that work?

Edit: Oops, out of my price range.

just get a known working 12a fuel pump and go with that. this way you dont have to buy a regulator. im sure you can get one in the 1st gen for sale section of the forum.

You need a fuel pump for a low pressure carb application. Stay away from
anything for fuel injection. The FI pumps will be way to high a psi and to
regulate it down would likely fry the pump early.

Even if you don't upgrade to the Carter fuel pump, you might still want to read through this thread. Lots of info related to removing and installing a fuel pump.

Good luck...

I agree with several above. Get a stock fuel pump. You won't have to change anything and it will work fine (out of the box or off the junk car). The SE pump will have too high pressure and screw things up. The Carter pump that I have on my race car is extremely loud. I have no insulation in the race car, so that makes things much louder, but it sounds like someone beating rapidly on the frame with a hammer. Yes, all the standard rubber insulators are installed as they came from Carter. With the non-stock pump you have to have a pressure regulator that requires piping changes and then has to be adjusted properly. A pain in the neck if you aren't racing your car.

If your engine/induction is stock, the stock fuel pump will work fine. I raced my car for years with the stock pump and had a no problems. People with "upgraded" pumps and pressure regulators were always screwing with them. I didn't have any issues until I increased the size of the primary jets. Even then, I might have been OK. I had an old fuel filter installed and the problems did not go away until I replaced it.

lmao. I forgot to post the link to the writeup! Sorry, here it is:

https://www.rx7club.com//showthread.php?t=529605

This is the writeup I did on installation of the Carter fuel pump and Holley regulator. Total cost was about $100.00 and you get a greatly improved fuel delivery system. Go stock and you spend more in order to get a system that was barely adequate to begin with.
