fb alternator replacement?

took the fb in to the shop today to have the alternator tested.

it's been killing the battery when the headlights are on for the past 2 weeks. researched in the forum to diagnose and had it confirmed today, it's putting out no voltage.

i'd love to find a replacement and do myself. whats the best route for finding a compatible replacement? is the upgraded alternator easier to find? all i see online is hideous bosch parts etc.

anyone dealt with this on the cheap and quick before?

thanks for reading.

A certain popular online auction site typically has rebuilt alternators for good prices. Rockauto is a fine retailer witj great customer service. I would suggest upgrading to an S4 alternator while you're replacing it anyway.

upgrade to an S4 or FD alt. S4 is bolt on, S5 and FD alts require re-wiring, but hey more POWAAAA

I managed to find a Champion rebuilt alternator for my FB at a local parts store, similar to Napa etc.

Phone around, but you should be able to source one locally quite easily. Other option is Rockauto, ebay etc....

Thanks everyone, dude at Napa is having it rebuilt for me. Cheaper than a replacement and done in a day. Thank you for all the advice.

Anyone have a clue about Stock exhaust fixes? Haha. This thing is as loud as a 2 stroke. I think it's had some weld jobs done in the past.

Stock exhaust fixes would involve more weld jobs

For the future, you would be better off upping the amperage by running an S4 alt to do the plug and play method. Or for us crazies, a Taurus or S5/FD alt is a major upgrade to get the most power out of the alternator. They'll all get the same engine RPM's, so why not get the most amperage available?

I just did this, bought an S4 alternator because my stock one finally puked a second time. It was
rebuilt about 20 years ago, so I got my moneys worth out of it. The S4 alternator was identical
except I had to swap my dual pulley from the old to the new and also swap the condensor that
was on the old to the new. Not sure I needed the condensor but maybe its for noise suppression?

It was $70 at Oriellys including the $10 core charge.
