E-brake...

When I have time, friends and I gather to mess around in big empty parking lots... donuts, (crappy) drifiting, fishtailing, etc, etc...

I want to be able to e-brake drift... but my e-brake does NOT lock up my rear wheels... how come it is so loose? I've already tightened the cable...

Your rear brake shoes may need adjusting(if it is drum). If it is not the case you may need better pads

Hope that helps

Pop your wheels off. You'll see your brake drum.

The shoes are inside and they press outwards against the side of teh drum...

You'll have to get it off to see the shoes.

Smack that bitch with a BFH to loosen it up. Should come right off.

See the shoes. You should have a good eighth of an inch of liner on them.. Any less and you might wanna replace. A sixteenth is when you have to replace like yesterday.

See in the middle that holds the shoes from being pulled together theres arod with a screw and gear lookin thing in the middle. You wanna turn that gear to spread the shoes out.

Give a couple turns, then try to put the drum back on. If the drum fits easily, take it back off and turn more. Once you can't fit the drum back over the shoes at all, back it off a turn or two and then put teh durm back on. (Sometimes it take a bit of doin'. Don't force the drum, but it might rub a bit.)

Remember the drums are mirror images of each other, so one screw gear adjuster will be left handed thread and turn the wrong way to tighten.

There will be a thing that hits that gear. It is suppose to be there. It's the self adjuster. It turns that gear one tooth at a time when you yank the e-brake, so if you rally wanted to, you could yank the e-brake a buncha times to adjust the drum brakes, but its much faster to do it yourself.

Note that this is typical drum brake stuff. My RX-7 doesnt have drums, so they might be slightly different... But they probably aren't. Check out the Haynes manual for more info.

You're pushing the clutch down when you grab it, right?

And, you're yanking up HARD, right?

The E-brakes on our cars are known to suck, they barely hold the cars still. Disc setups are even worse (discs don't clamp as well as drums).

Today, if time approves, i will yank off my wheels and check all the possible problems...

I have an 84GSL a90GTU. In my GTU I can easily lock the rear tires with the e-brake, not so with my GSL and they are both disc brakes.

I could whip the *** around in my GSL with the U-turn lever on dry pavement.

Passenger: Wrong way dude. Gotta turn around.

Me: Okay

Passenger: What're you doing? Why are you speeding up? No way you're gonna pull a u-ie around here.

Me: Sure can.

Passenger: Okay.. but hurry up. The road narrows to one lane one way soon.. Up you're too late now. Gotta make a 3 pointer... You suck.

Me: 3 pointers are for the patient, me not being one of them. *clutch down, yoink lever*

Passenger: OH ****! DUDE! Don't EVER do that again.

Me: Told ya I'd make it. If you don't like my driving, don't bum rides.

What's the easiest way to learn how to do that?

I usually take my 7 to a huge empty parking lot... I like to do stuff when the pavement's wet (alot easier to just spin outa control )

I've mastered the "fish tail" (if you can do that)
I've yet to learn the classic reverse and swing around...
Y is it so hard to get the front tires to slide?! It feels like I'm gonna snap the damn wheels off...

BTW--I discovered that my rear right drum was leaking brake fluid... NOT A GOOD SIGN... I took it to a local Top Line Tires to get it checked out and hopefully fixed for around $150.

Top Line: It'll cost ya $400. Lots of things need replacement...
Me: *thinking* God dammit...

Well, turns out I need new shoes and my drum needs resurfacing and it's been resurfaced too many times to be resurfaced again. Nice thing was that labor only costs $90 for everything--I guess that's why they charge friggin twice the amount for all the parts I needed. Brake shoes (4) $20 at Top Line... $10 at a local parts shop... I also need cylinders for both my drums (?)... and some other minor things where the price is incredible at Top Line...

Anyway, it looks like i'm gonna have to get on my hands and knees to do this dirty job by myself...

One cheap bastard (me)

Why even use the E-brake, what i do is leave it in 2nd and the just floor it and the car will do a 90 all the way to a 720, whatever you want. We are talking about in the snow right?

Snow? I rarely see that stuff down south... I do that kind-o stuff on dry/wet pavement
When it is wet, it's more challenging! *watch those tires slide*
