I was reading a post and i forget which thread was but someone said if you were using the R/B Holley and intake you should not use the vacuum off of the distributor is this true?

I'm going to bump this as my 83 GS doesn't have the vacuum advance hooked up and both ports are open on the distributor but she runs just fine at upper RPM's.
I have the stock Nikki but this has been bothering me a bit. Is it OK to run it like that?

I dont know.Wheb i got my car they were not hooked up.It ran pretty good, then i was told they needed to be hooked up.I messed with to many things to pinpoint the effects of having them hooked up or not.

Hook it up. Better gas mileage, more grunt power at lower rpms. No drawbacks to using it, so hook it up and you'll feel the difference....

First off theres no vacuum off the distirbutor Vacuum comes off of the carburator
or the intake manifold (like for the brake booster). Sorry, I had to point it out.

Not sure about the holley, but if it has a ported vacuum port then by all means
hook it up. Ported vacuum is when theres no vacuum on the port until the throttle
opens. If its not ported you can still hook it up to manifold vacuum but the idle will
be lumpy until you rev it because it will be advanced from the always present
manifold vacuum.

In any event, hook it up either way and you will get better performance off of idle
and see a slight increase in mpg as well. I run my vacuum advance off of the
manifold vacuum because my Dell carb has no ported vacuum and it works great.

I am trying to pinpoint change in my cars performance. When i first got my car it had stock exhaust and the car was running way to rich. The lines off of dist were not hooked to the carb.I would take it for a quick spin and would get sideways in 2nd,with ease.I messed with the carb, got it to stop smoking, but on my header and hooked up vac lines and it doesnt seem to run the same as before. When the rpms get up the car hauls ***.

With your setup you will notice the difference. It will pull better down low because the advance kicks in off of idle. You should try it. Only cost a few pennies for
vacuum line

Vacuum advance works off the vacuum (duh)

Mechanical advance works off the crank (half speed). You will reach max mechanical advance at 4kRPM. Tune for that and you will be fine.

Rotary Engineering said to disconnect the vacuum advance when installing the dual 36DCD. I have not hooked mine up yet, but I was planning on following RE's instructions. Should I try to connect the vacuum advance? Maybe add another nipple on the intake manifold?

i would start with how they want you to do it, presuming of course you have the right kit.

then hook it up, and see what it does

u can't just add another nipple to the intake, that's a constant vac source, like for the brake booster. the dist needs port vac, the amount of vac varies with throttle.
