My build-up thread

Hey guys,
I just wanted to start a thread for the buildup of my $500 80 SA. All comments and suggestions are welcome and if its a negative comment then please explain your point of view!

So I have had my eye on this car for a while and I recently wrecked and totalled my 84 GSL-SE (RIP 9-7-09)...moment of silence...and I couldnt stand to just part it out and get rid of it. So I bought this car as a complete and stock car and the main reason i got it was because it matched my dad's one owner SA!

Mine is on the left and dad's on the right

I am starting this thread a little late in the process though, over that past couple of months I have been working on swapping the 13B out of my wrecked SE car into the SA and gettin it wired up.

Some progress pics!

the 13b awaitin its new home!

Finally installed after a few tries!

my custom made fan shroud!

That's one of my favorite 7 colors, nicely done. I hope you were able to salvage the SE suspension too Keep in mind that the SE fuel tank has a sump cup for the FI You can swap in the SE fuel tank, lines and pump but you will also need to swap the spare tire well to fit the S3 fuel tank. I know it's a lot of work but that may be less work than modding the SA fuel tank with a sump cup.

The other option is adding a low pressure fuel pump and surge tank to supplement the SE FI pump.

Thanks guys! I was very hesitant to go the FI route but I wanted to see if I could make it work.

Trochoid, I do plan on swapping the SE suspension over very soon to it. This past weekend with the help of Bad83 we got it to finally start after working out a few bugs that were in it and replacing a couple of things.

I went with the SA fuel tank and all i had to do was run a bigger return line to the tank and it works fine so far. I dont plan on letting it get below a half tank so I wont be to worried about the sump.

I will post up some more pictures once I get the SE suspension swapped out

It's coming along nicely. Glad I could be of assistance. Don't worry about any of it. You have seen and ridden in my turbo FB. I think you can say first hand that anything is possible

You should swap both the supply and return lines. The SE has the largest supply line of ANY 7, even the TIIs and FDs. The SE pumps puts out more gph/lph than any of the later FI pumps. Since it's also a high pressure pump, all of the rubber fuel lines need to be changed to FI rated fuel hose and clamps. Worm drive clamps are a nono.

Thats good to hear. I just noticed that you both have SA's with sunroofs. Mine was originally canary yellow. I hope to paint it back once I get my fenders and hood back on. GoodLuck with your build bro

Nice job, I had a 79 and an 80 years back. (My first 7's) They are what first drew me to the rotary/RX! Loved those cars. SA's are sweet. That's kick *** that you and dad have twin 7's. Cool.

Ok guys i have a small and unfortunate update,

I have gotten the car runnin and a make shift exhaust on it for my eardrums sake.

The problem i am havin now is that when revving it once the secondary throttle plates open up it wants to die out, I have been tryin to get the timing set and for some reason both of the lights i have tried want to only work on T1 wire and are very sparatic flashes.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know!!!!

Unless you removed or changed the dizzy during the engine swap, the timing should be good. Pull the dizzy cap, check it and the rotor. It sounds like you may have a fuel supply problem. You may need to install the fuel pickup/return lines from the SE tank into the SA tank. The fuel pick up line on the SA is much smaller than the SE.
