Direct Replacement Carb..

Hey guys, new to the board.. I have an 82 RX7 and need a new Carb, I tried rebuilding the old one and it didnt work well, I had some water in the gas tank which has corroded the carb over the years. Is there a direct replacement that will replace the stock carb and bolt to the stock intake manifold? A new Holley or Weber that is not an arm and a leg? The car is just not worth that much, but I do like it.

I have thought about upgrading to the 13b injection, if I could find one.. and if it would work.. any thoughts, what are my options.. I dont want to pay $600 for a rebuilt one from Autozone or Advance and I dont want to pay $1200 for a new one.. even if they are avaible still from Mazda.

Thanks

you would be looking at around $800 for a weber or holley set up, you can not use the stock manifold with any other carburetor withpout some modification. The same goes for the 13b efi, you would have to do some adapting to get it to work, and it would probably be more of a hassle than its worth.

You may consider sending off your carb to have it reconditioned. Maybe try out a sterling carb. http://www.sterlingmetalworks.com/services_index.html

You ought to be able to get one for ~$50 or so, maybe a little more. Buy one, rebuild it. That's your lowest cost option. Otherwise, contact sterling or rx7carl about one of their rebuilds. It's more $$$ but a very nice piece of work.

Even a Sterling is less than half the price of a Weber setup. Since your carb is already fried, I'd say that's the way to go.

Thanks guys.. I wouldnt mind the extra work or expense to install the fuel injection.. I think they came with the bosch unit, I am familiar with that as I have that set up on my 78 280Z.

Im real leary about buying a used carb on ebay, may not be any better than what I already have if you know what I mean. Does anyone have a phone number for Sterling? I cant find it on their web page.. are they a reputable dealer?

I don't mind going either way, carb or fi, I just want it to run well again, then I can takle the rust lol.

Thanks

As far as I know, you'd need a 13B engine to go with the FI from a 13B. I'm sure someone has done something to rig a FI setup for a 12A, but I'm sure it's not straightforward or easy.

Just send a email to rx7carl or sterling. If you want to talk to them, they can provide their phone numbers to you.

You do take a chance when you buy a used carb from ebay or wherever. But you can minimize the risk by hooking up with a seller with a good reputation and you can ask for pics.

BTW, what's rusty inside your carb? Have you soaked it in a bucket o' carb cleaner? That, a toothbush, some nylon guitar string and some compressed air should do wonders for an old, gummed up carb.

I might sell mine after I have my other setup ready. It is rebuilt and modded last August, all the emission things are cleaned out, and got mechanical secondary, I believe it is rejeted, and the intake manifold was ported as well. I can let it go pretty cheap, if you are interested, just PM me I will keep you posted.
