Difference between FB and FC starters?

I recently bought an S4 motor from a member that had rebuilt it and wanted to put it into an FB. I am putting it back in an 87 FC NA. I changed the oil pan and front cover back to stock S4 NA.

When I was bolting up the S4 FC transmission, I realized that the starter looks different than mine.

It seems the wiring is "on top" of the starter for one. Secondly, the bolt holes are threaded. I seem to remember the bolt holes being "through-holes" and bolt into the transmission or through the transmission and engine flange with a nut.

I do not know what an FB starter looks like, but this may be one.

My Question:

Is it possible to "drill-out" the threads on this starter and use it on the second gen?

The car this going in is a 87 GXL (Still NA).

SA starters go "GrrrrrRrrrrRrrr"

FB starters go "WhrrRrrRrr"

FC starts sorta wind up like a turbine.

Other that they all do interchange. May have to use a through bolt and nut for some starters since some have a threaded top hole and some don't.

Awesome!

Thanks!

P.S. I am using a S4 NA flywheel with an S4 NA transmission. Are the teeth pitch and coount correct for this flywheel?

THanks!

That's the creepy part. IIRC the SA straters have 8 teeth, FB have 9 or 11, and the FC have 11 or 12, but they all bolt up in the same place and all interchange.]

Don't know how they do it, since the noses are all the same too.

FC starter on 12a?

Im 99% sure it will fit and wire up with no problems.. but it has more teeth on the drive gear..

They must have upgraded the starters for the FC, would this be a worthy upgrade?

It will fit and wire up....

but it will grind and wont catch due to the extra teeth.

I'm running an aluminum flywheel that is good on N/A RX7's from 83-91.. if it's compatible with an FC, shouldn't the starter be fine with it?

maybe the stock flywheels are different?

If I remember right, the FB starter used threaded holes and the FC uses longer bolts and a nut or something.

That said, if you get a longer bolt and a nut then you can use a FC starter.

TurboII starters have mounting ears further out to accommodate the 240mm flywheel.

You've got no proof. Video/audio clip(s) or it didn't happen.

since the 13b is a bigger motor, the starter should spin the little 12a with ease!
I can figure out the hardware problem,

Sounds like it's gonna work

Have you done it?

Obviously not.

Like I said, there's weird voodoo, because THE STARTERS ALL INTERCHANGE.

I have run pretty much any combination of SA/FB/FC starter and SA/FB/FC transmission you could imagine, and they all interchange except for the top bolt issue, which is a non issue if you have some 5/16" allthread, a couple nuts, and some big washers.

The flywheels are all the same diameter, too.

Note: I am of course only talking about N/A, and manual transmission. The automatics definitely use a different starter and the T2 definitely has a different starter and much larger flywheel.

So, why do you insist on posting even though you clearly do not have any idea what you're talking about? It's perfectly okay to keep your mouth shut.

Agree keep it cool no need to get rowdy. It's just a machine. Wrong is wrong but it should be more technical lashing than personal.
