CO Cat converter

Okay I have removed my cat converter from the car (its a 81) and pluged the hose that led to it with a bolt and a band clamp. Anyone know if there is anything else I need to do under the hood after I have done this?

Id also like to know some specifics about what to shut off on the rats nest that is emmessions related but wont affect my idle. Im really happy with the way it runs right now it idles around 500 rpm and cold starts every time and I dont want to mess that up.

CO bolt

Well the cat that was on there was actually a aftermarket one so there was a little heat resistant tube I just found one that fit in there and tightened the band clamp back down.

Will removing the air pump actually improve performance with the exception of the loss of weight? I realize that it does use a bit of power from the engine to run but it cant be that much can it to have to tear the thing apart, it is after all my daily driver. Is there something that I can do to disable it also isnt it used for other things and not just emisssions?

Sounds to me like you are ready to go ahead and remove the "rat's nest." Removing the air pump will do three things for you.

1) Cleans up the engine bay and makes your car easier to work on by removing a now useless part of the factory emissions system.

2) Reduces the weight of your car which will improve performance.

3) Reduces the parasitic drag on the engine, which will also improve performance.

Do a search for "rats nest removal" You should find all the information that you need to remove the emissions system from the 12A. Do some reading and if you have any questions, report back. Go get 'em killer!

Well since its registered a classic I only have to do emissions on it every four years. I am for certian not going to mess with the rats nest, Ive heard horror stories. I had a new pipe made and all I have to do is just bolt the old cat back on pull out the bolt and poof its legal agian.

I guess what im saying is there something I can do to Disable things related to the emissions without having to remove anything.

BTW I do notice a real increase in power without the cat on it. I am wondering what it is going to do for my gas milage.

I needed to take the thing off anyway I plan on doing the seafoam thing and I read that it will kill the cat.

Just take off the belt on the air pump and replace it with a 3L220 V-belt. The V-belt will go around the eccentric shaft and the water pump but not the air pump. This way you won't have the parasitic drag from the air pump, but you won't have to worry about unhooking it.

Is this the v-belt? Goodyear Fractional Horsepower Belt: 3/8" Top Width; 22" Nominal Outside Length

You could unhook the rats nest but leave everything intact. You would then just have to label and then replace the hoses when it comes time to do the e-test. The whole job is reversable, as long as nothing gets broken in the process.

seems to me

Seems to me that most everyone does it for some type of cosmetic reason. Is there really a performance advantage to removing the thing or couldn't some hoses just be capped off? Becides I like the reaction I get when people see the rats nest and have no idea what it is they are looking at.

I ordered the vbelt to bypass the air pump today. Ill make sure to let everyone know how it goes. Seems pretty straight forward to me.
