Car won't start and idles like crap
OK,
after a few posts on here, my car has finally failed (vice being intermittent). Briefly what I have done to this point...drained the tank with coffee filter - clean, new fuel pump (I have verified at the carb it is working and I can hear it as well), new fuel filter, new dizzy cap and rotor, new plug wires, new plugs, new ignition coils. I would drive it 5-6 times, no issues, then out of nowhere it would start to run like crap and it would either die or I would have to pedal the gas to get it home. If it did die, there was no starting it anytime soon. It would restart after sitting for an hour or two. Now it is no longer intermittent. It wouldn't start. Choke on, choke off, no gas pedal, with gas pedal. I checked the carb and it looks dry. That being the case, I squirt some gas in there and it starts and continues to run (idles rough though and I had to set the idle higher to keep it running) but is acceptably responsive when "gunning" it. After running it (post squirting gas in there), I shut it off and tried to restart. It didn't restart. I started it several times (squirt of fuel) and shut it down with the same result every time. I checked the "fuel windows" after I shut it down and both are it mid level, so guessing my floats are OK. Any troubleshooting ideas at this point? Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated...I miss driving her...it's a lot of fun.

Perhaps vacuum issue? I can't really explain the intermittent parts other than maybe it was minor and has eventually turned into a more major vacuum leak. I've used smoke to troubleshoot vacuum leaks before. What I did is have someone keep it running while I used an incense to see where it gets pulled in. Another a technique I used was a vacuum (shopvac or whatever) with again an incense.. Hook the vacuum to the intake and start searching.
Please note, while I can't imagine a vacuum or an incense would damage anything please consider your actions.
Also! empty your fuel bowls BEFORE using the vacuum or you'll be potentially sucking up fuel.

So squirting gas in manually and it restarts? Sounds like a rats nest issue. Check all the vacuum lines and any electrical connections to the carb. If the bowls have gas and it won't start then something is telling the carb to not allow fuel in.
I will look it over for the 10th time and look for anything out of place (vacuum lines - electrical). I have been wanting to pull out the rat's nest, but have been too afraid of messing it up...LOL!!
