for $250 though you could have done the roll on paint job. that way the paint is extremely tough and looks good. thats probably the route ill go.
This is what I was thinking as well. Wonder which is better? I'm at work so his pics are not available due to proxies but it sounds cool for $250. My problem right now is body work. I've been orbital sanding the car with 40grit (my paint is real bad, fire...) and it is taking forever. I finished one fender area last week and noticed with the paint sanded down that I couldn't see all the imperfections I needed to pull/bondo! So, I'm kind of wondering how to get this crap taken care of. Since my body work needs are 90% front fenders/light lids and front end swappable parts, I may just... well, swap with a junk yard donor. My plan then is definately roll on.

Anyone find out the american counterpart rustoleum specifics? I found several "enamels", but am unsure of the exact can to get.

Any runs in the clear? I saged mine a bit and have to scrape them.
No runs in the clear at all!!! I put it on too lightly actually, It came out looking like I just misted it on but once I wetsand/buff it it should smooth out. I definately put enough on to have a good buffer zone for sanding it out.

That car looks good, I almost did not notice the trim was gone.

the question is, how long will it last? and how do you wax it?

I spent a good deal of time prepping it, and in the past Ive done touchups with the same paint so I think it should last actually surprisingly well.

Its not just off the shelf touch up paint, I went down to rondex (the local paint shop) and had them make up custom cans with a prety decent quality paint...they make the paint on the spot and put it into a rattle can for you!

IMO, I dont think it will come off any faster than a real paint job, just takes a little longer to cure and is softer in the begining. Its basically the same paint that you would buy for a real paintgun, just put into a rattle can!

As for waxing, I plan to just give a generously long amount of time to cure, and then I will wetsand/buff...but after that it should wax up just like anything else!!!
or at least I dont see why not.

Consistant paint job? I think its prety consistant!!

I actually have a paint gun/compressor, but I felt much more comfortable with the paint cans, and since I was doing it outside I knew that the biggest factor for consistancy would be crap getting into the paint, but it actually turned out amazing for being parked under a tree.
Something about the amount of paint the compressor setup puts out was a bit intimidating. I have used it a couple times, but its much less forgiving when you make a mistake. One little messup and you lay the paint on waaaay to heavy which causes drips quickly, something you dont really worry about with the rattle cans.

From what people say after seeing it in person, I think I made the right choice.
The more I think about it, all things considered I really couldnt have beaten this job.

Its funny to think, but the wheels/tires actually cost me more than the car, repair supplies, and paint put together.
All in all, It was a definate score!

you got to move your arm quick with a real paint gun, I found that the paint was easy, but I wish I had bought a better clear that did not need to go on so heavy, The sags are not but just more work.

Nice color and a great paint job Gen1, I like it almost as much as I liked the original Tornado Silver on my colleague's 1980 GS back in 1980. I especially like that you did it yourself with low tech equipment.

Now, are you going to give me some credit for suggesting the Tornado Silver color back in your previous post, when you were asking for color suggestions?

If not, I still like it anyway, looks great!

Ray

Oh yeh, you must have seen Kim's post on paint colors, here's some photos of one real pretty Tornado Silver that looks a lot like yours.

Yep, thats how I did it!
The size carriage bolts I used caused the lenses to require a bit of enlarging, as well as the rubber lightbulb holders.

I sanded the lettering off the lower part of the lens so it would sit flush with the body. I used to leave the lettering on and just put it in with a dab of silicone on the bottom edge so water cant run in, but when they are tight with no letters its surprisingly not needed.

I just stuck my hand in where the taillight goes to
tighten up the back ones, and for the fronts I just stick my hand in behind the wheelwells plastic cover. Takes some bending but itll go back into place.

Yes, its harder to change a bulb....but I dont care, it looks cool!
