LOL, welcome to 'New School' and FI old man. Great looking body on the SE. I agree, pre-assemble everything. Most of what you'll probably be messing with will be the passenger side ecu harness. Skip the Haynes manual and download the FSMs in my sig line. Though I suspect you have the link already. Btw, posted an answer about the old school housings in my for sale thread.

Yeah, man. I feel like I'm totally out of my element. I'm much happier with float bowls than pulsation dampers.

And WTF's up with the BAC and vacuum switch? Was Mazda really too retarded to use a proper IAC stepper motor and freaking MAP sensor over an on-off vacuum switch? The metering door is fabulous - increased horsepower through additional pumping losses - friggin great.

At least it all ought to work once it goes together, but it all still looks like a bunch of bullshit in a box.

Most of that crap was sorted out by the time they got to the S5, then Mazda started being stupid all over again when they put even more crap of the FDs. Without ac and ps, there really isn't a strong need for the bac.

Crit, PM me your address. I still have the outer tie rods for an rx7 that you sent me and your pitman arm. Sorry it took so long, but I put them aside and totally forgot about them till I cleaned out my garage the other day and found them. Also, did you ever come accross any pitman arms for for your duece as I need one badly. Oh and congrats on the new 7, it looks very clean.

I have a pitman arm for the RX-2, but it's unique to the S3 and S4 cars, so it's 74-only in the US. The keyway is in both sides, so it can be reversed for LHD or RHD. PM sent.

I had a local guy contact me (just down the road, honestly) that has an unused harness. I hope to get together with him today and use his as a template to rewrap mine. The other garage space has been cleared of all the RX-2 hardware, which was no easy feat, and the car's now inside with all the parts so I can work in the cold.

One BIG unknown is the mechanical side of the EFI setup. I know I need manifold gaskets and that the car has rotten door seals which I'll order, but aren't going in until later, but I'm told that I also need to order injector grommets, o-rings, pulsation damper ($180, WTF!) and other hardware that's new.

Is there a writeup somewhere that talks through the theory of operation of the RE-EGI system to explain what everything does? This would also help me better understand what can be removed down the road, and how to troubleshoot the setup.

There is write up in the 2nd gen section on emmisions/rats nest removal for the TIIs. Almost all of the parts are similar between the S3 and S4 NA/TII. of course, on the TII many of the parts are in a different spot, lol. Keep in mind that not all have had good luck or steady idles afterwards. One can do the throttle body mod too, but one needs to think carefully about removing the thermowax and losing the cold start idle feature.

My 2nd gen DD is start and go, no warm up other than windows in the winter. When I did the TB mod, I had to sit for 5-10 minutes before I could pull away from the curb. Quickly went back stock after the first winter of that bs.

Can you tell me more about cold start, hot start, and cruise? I'm missing all those things, if they're carryovers from the 12A. I expect cold start to be the same, that hot start would no longer be a standalone cable, but just use the BAC to bump the throttle, and that cruise would be exactly the same. It might go to a different spot, of course.

I've seen one other guy's SE start up cold and it started at high idle (or choke, maybe). Is that done with the first set of butterflies in the throttle body, like a traditional carb choke? Does the BAC also bump the speed up as if the AC were on or PS at a stop?

cold start is actuated using a thermowax and vaccum. if you understand, i'll go no further. if you dont, i can explain. cruise is the same as a non SE. there is no mechanical hot start assist.

Please explain the thermowax, and how does the high-idle happen? Choke, BAC, or an actuator on the throttle?

the thermowax is attatched to the rear of the upper intake manifold. it has one coolant line running to it and a vaccume line. essentially it uses a wax filled chamber. when the engine is cold, the wax is solid. when the engine is started and as it warms up, coolant is passing through the thermowax, melting the wax. as the wax melts the vaccume is slowly cut off, helping to lower the idle speed.

The thermowax is part of the linkage on the backside of the TB ( the white plastic thingy, lol). You should notice a 3/8" or so diameter hose that connects to an aluminum tube at the bac. This hose carrys coolant. It warms the bac, oddly enough, and continues on to the thermowax solenoid. When the engine is cold, pressing the accellerator sets the linkage for cold start. As the engine warms, the thermowax melts and relases the the cold start high idle. The cold start is similar to a choke butterfly, but it uses the butterflys in the TB instead.

This system is relatively simple and trouble free. Contamination, build up in the external linkage and carbon build up inside the BAC are the most common problems.

the BACV essentially helps to compensate for a load put on the engine by say the a/c or power steeing. what its does in a nutshell is increase the vaccume to the engine, raising the idle to compensate for the load. i guess in theory it does the same thing a throttle opener would on the 12A.

Man, I would not waste your time putting the SE motor back in. Save up for a month months and get a JDM TII in there, SE motors do not have a tonne of available modifications besides ignition, exhuast, and porting, while a TII can have huge ammounts of mods done, they already come turbo, so you can easily upgrade them, etc.

i dont think thats an option because Crit said: "FWIW, the deal is that the wife would only let me buy an SE if it was a runner. She's out of town for 2 weeks, so the goal is to have it running, emissioned, registered, and de-emissoined (at least just a good exhaust) by the time she gets back, at which point I'll put the AC back in it and take care of other stuff."

Thank you Crit. Best of Luck on your new GSL-SE

Dear Crit, Last week you indicated to me you wanted to buy my GSL-SE and then said there was too much rust and damage in the 50 pics I sent you. All you had to do Crit is say I found a better car or a cheaper car. I stopped selling my GSL-SE based on what you said Crit. You must have had one good laugh. Now I know why you did not respond to my email. You were laughing too hard. Best Wishes.

That looks like the one Crit, very nice! I think I have a spare red leather passenger seat, if the one under that cover is damaged, let me know if you want it. (I also have a pair of red velour seats in good shape I'd negotiate for your leather ones, if you want to go that way). Nice find!
