Ok. So Ben calls me. While were talking, the subject of carb cleaner came up. I figured I had a full can to waste, so I started spraying it down the carb. There were a couple of times it "popped" like it was going to take off. Then........"POP". A big flame shoots out the exhaust port. Wouldn't have been that big a deal, but I had a towel lying on the inner fender that I had there catching the crap flying out. Well..........It burst into flames. I grabbed it and threw it into a wheelbarrow I had sitting beside the garage. I bet the neighbors really love me now!

So here are the pictures. Sam came by in Big Blue. I laughed at him needing a huge truck to carry one engine, when my protege handled 2 in the trunk. Must be Mazda Power!
Comically sized engine to truck picture
In the bed
Arrived at his place. Out with the old, in with the new!
Cleaning up the ports a bit:
Carburetor and dizzy:
Almost complete, got the alternator and the belts on. Lets check the flywheel and clutch, eh?
No one had a 54mm socket around, so I ran back home to grab my breaker bar and some "earl" (oil for you northern folk). When I got back, we broke off the nut after some trying... here is what we got. Flywheel and Clutch
So out with the 225mm and in with the 215mm from the old engine. Still was in great shape too! Happy time ensued
Got it in the bay
Got the rad and oil cooler hooked up. All systems go, fill the fluids!
I hate it when he gets that look in his eye...

You guys should have called me up. I have the flywheel stopper and that big ole socket for the flywheel nut plus converters to use it on a 1/2" impact or whatever.

daaaamn just read this, sorry to hear about the 12a but damn glad you got it back in without haste!!
has it fired up yet? if not i may have a trick for you to try
also to the person that said the apex seals start chattering at 7400rpms... WHAT?? apex seal chatter can be caused by many factors. rpm alone could be one if your winding the ever loving **** out of it. i have taken stock rotating assemblies over the 9k mark. chatter is caused by poor lubrication on the seals, bad balancing, worn bearings, and a few other issues.
why do these apex seals fail so randomly? well, it's usually not random in an n/a engine. especially the 12a's with their 3mm apex seals. a lot of times these high mileage rotor housings will start to flake and these pieces can get caught up in the seal. sometimes people who don't pre-mix will start to get chatter becaues the omp is pretty pathetic at best and the seal will skip and bust.
there are honestly a ton of factors, but you can't really complain if it's already got a ton of miles on it. so keep beating the hell out of them! if you are unsure, then do a rebuild
kick *** SAM!

Just an update for today. Still haven't got her fired off yet. I did almost get it running about 4 or 5 times, but couldn't get her to take off. I'll need someone to crank her over while I'm spraying in the Ether. Any of you local guys busy tomorrow afternoon? She is wanting to fire so bad!
