Another water down the intake thread!

so while waiting for the paint to dry on a new fender for my 82 gx we decided to try the water down teh carb treatment.

we took about 12oz of distilled water in a clean mcdonalds cup and connected a nice long hose to the idle compensator line

ran the car up to running temperature and had at 'er.

first only let the water dribble in... and then let it suck up a big snortful...
i have to rev the engine up to 2200 ish out of fears of it bogging and stalling, but ran just fine

thre was a little steam pumped out the back but no blowing chunks of carbon.

then took teh car for a spirited 30 min dirve

the result is a 50/50 debate about whether the car didles smoother. ( i think theres a vacuum leak that i havent found, given the car spikesand then misses - but only sometimes)

SO i am left thinking many thoughts

1.) ALl of you people are dirty boys with dirtier motors!

2.) i really needed to pour a snapple bottle's worth right down the primaries. At any rate more than 10-12oz worth.,

3.) My engine is just exceptionally clean already. THis one i doubted , it smokes a little if i engine brake at really high revs, and seals between the housings are leaking oil, such that the previous owner ran a bead of silicon along the sealing points.

all in all i didnt get the life changing boost some of you got from this procedure, I don't really think i got any benefit at all...

ANyo comments or suggestions? maybe i needed to do more water?

or pour it in faster?

or just get my engine much dirtier?

Your engine could've been just fine with very little buildup. What's your driving style? How often does your engine see high revs and do you run 'er for extended drives?

ah

well since i got it i have ben reading it and since the general consensus is run it close to or jsut over the redline regularly and take it for extended runs i have been doing jsut htat

i have a fair commute to school that involves a nice bit of freeway that allows me to wind out second and sometimes 3rd...

i try to keep it reasonable since it is an older engine thats already leaking, i figured that 7500rpm is ok

8500 rpm probably isn't

Your driving style seems to be perfect for keeping a clean engine.

perhaps you do not have the carbon build up you expected. or perhaps the engine has been rebuilt and just leaks despite the rebuild.

I did this and I didnt have any chunks out the pipes either. It just smoked for a while, then stopped while I continued to pour in water. So i guess whatever was in there came out.

Depends on your exhaust too....

If you have a pretty stock restrictive exhaust, alot of the carbon will just go to your cats and live there for all eternity.

I have a straight through exhaust with just a turbo muffler, and I left some thick spots of carbon on the ground.

Probably equal to what you would expect if you ground a charcoal briquette from a grill on the ground a few times.

I Have stock pipes with some Pep Boys muffler that the owner before me stuck on to make people think he was a racer. I would rip it off but I dont think the nieghbors would enjoy hearing a Rotary with no muffler revving out side of their house. As soon as I get some $$ im going RB everything. But when I did the water trick_I noticed right away that it ran smoother and the tires would spin when I would take off like I used to. It took about 30min to get used to my clutch again and keep from spinning the tires every time I pulled away from a stop light.
