riceburner1r2001: Are you looking for an upgrade or a cheap replacement or what? The S5 ('89-'91) RX-7 alts work nice. They are 80 amp and drop right in with a basic wiring mod. If you are willing to spend more ($160 or so), you can get a modded FD alt (100+ amp) from Silverrotor on the 2nd gen forum. I would just get a used S5 alt on the forum or ebay. I got mine for $30. You can always have a local alt/starter shop rebuild it if you want if as good as new.

tjgosurf: Yes, I have. The hardest part is getting that spacer back in and lined up just by feel.

I had a '88 Subaru alternator on mine for quite some time. You need to use the pivot bolt from the Subaru since it's a smaller diameter, but it falls right in and plugs right in.

Lemonade means that the alt in the RX-7s is made by Mitsubishi, not Mazda. Do you want a replacement or an upgrade? We need to know what you want so that we can help you.

i guess you havent even opened your engine bay. i think mitsu electric made every piece in an rx-7, and they make quite a bit for the rx-8's. so pay attention, dont be stupid, and dont make me yell at you so that carl has to lock the thread.

Mitsubishi's car business is a VERY minor fraction of their total business.

Mitsubishi makes all of the electronics for Mazda and, IIRC, Honda. They also make cars, monitors, heavy equipment, and other things. I wouldn't doubt it if the diffs we use are actually Mitsu by design and not Mazda, given that Honda uses our diffs in their S2000.

Hitachi makes all of the electronics and some other things (differentials, etc) for Subaru and Nissan. In addition to all manner of electronica, I'm sure you've heard of their monitors...

The Japanese comanies are nothing like the American companies... look up "zaibatsu".

- Pete (And then there are Honda lawnmowers, tractors, and motorcycles... Suzuki motorcycles... Yamaha electronic organs....)

No... not that I'm aware of, anyway. They did build the Toyota 3S-GTE engines, and the 3.0 and 3.2l Taurus SHO engines, and they did much of the work on the 3.4l V8 SHO engines (which are now 4.4l and used in Volvos...)

If you just want to replace the alternator, just replace it.

If you can't afford a reman, get a Delco alternator and adapt it. Alternators are the simplest things to adapt.

a mitsu mighty max pick up has the very same alt, as do the Dodge D-50 Ram pick up, which shares the same drivetrain as the mitsu. Not for sure as to the years, but ANY D-50 or Mighty Max should have the identical alt which bolts on w/o any mods. As for the wiring, the plugs are the same but I don't know if it's wired up the same.

Then go to your local auto parts store and slap 60 bucks on the counter. The guy with six teeth behind the counter will hook you up.
