acceleration problems 85 12a

A wierd problem I have been having since i got my 85 rx7 is that it will randomly have trouble accelerating

Ill be driving on the freeway for like 30 minutes then all the sudden (mostly when going up hill) itll chug and decellerate

I dont feel safe driving on the freeway with the thing lol

Its mostly fine on streets but does it once in a while going up hill

Could this be my carb? or fuel sending unit? or even my fuel pump? Looking for the cheepest fix :P Please help as I am going to work on it tomorrow so some direction would be greatly appreciated

Love my car and hate to not have fun driving it haha

First thing would be to check your fuel filter. Has it been replaced? recently? at all? Its the cheapest fix, and gives the symptoms you are describing.

Still have a look at it, if the gas tank is bad, the filter can clog up fairly fast. If its not clogged, then theres a good chance that the fuel pump or even the fuel pump wiring is going bad.

ya, hoping it isnt the pump, ive read on this board that its very possibly the sending unit being clogged, might drop the tank and check it out

He's right check the fuel filter, got this 84in Dec 04 and it had the same problem especially going up the bridges and expressway entrance ramps. Change the filter in Jan even though the guy said he had put one on about 8mos before . It quit for about 2 mos then it started again, pulled the filter off agoin and it had so much sludge in it, I replaced it with a clear one from autozone. Have not had a problem since. If he car has been sitting awhile before you got it put some injector/carb cleaner or Stabil. Hope this helps,GAry

If a fresh inline filter doesn't fix it, then pull the fuel pickup out of the tank and check the sock. If the sock is stuffed, clean the tank. If the sock is split, clean out the hard fuel pickup line and be prepared to change fuel filters more often.

Change the fuel filter again. When I got my 84 GSL going after sitting a year, it had alot of crap in the tank, which I didn't much know about. The car was running great but it kept choking out at highway speeds. I checked and pretty much replaced everything electric and fuel related, including the fuel pump (thank you, parts car). But in the end it turned out to be crap in the tank fowling the filter, once every two or three tanks of gas. After five filter changes, the problem finally went away, now I cruise down the highway and pass at 80 mph. Total cost, about $20, plus my stupidity.

Ray is prolly rite. when i got my 7 a while back it had problems starting and accelarating. I changed the fuel filter once but didnt fix the problem, someone told me to repalced it until it was fixed but i was to lazy so i just bougth those carburetor/ fuel injection gas cleaners and put them in almost every day lol. they sell some octane boosters those really helped also. just make sure u let ur tank almost at empty all the time. that seemed to fix my problem.
