12A Brainbox Use

OK, I've been removing the interior of the track car and decided to pull out the brainbox from the footwell of the passenger side. A lot of the mounting hardware was rusted up anyway, so I was going to remount it another way. I decided to start the car up to see what would happen and everything seemed to work well with the box unplugged. I've got an RB Holley and no emmissions. What is the use of the brainbox now? Do I really need it now? What would it control?

As far as i remember, the brainbox is only used for the emmissions itself, aslong as you dont have an auto, then there might be another one for that. But if not, then you can remove it, aslong as you arent using any of the wiring for your holley. I dont believe it ties into anything other than emmissions, so i think your good to go.

Yeah, I remember throwing that box away. Looked kind of important, but never missed a thing.

Hmmmm so none of the gauges or other interior electronics rely on this "brain box"? Interesting stuff, learn something new everyday.

I was just wondering if I could completely remove it for when I go standalone, but I guess I can...

All that box is for is the emissions. It controls nothing else as far as I know. Its basically just a crude ECU.

The only thing I know for sure that it will affect is on the later FB's, the "brain" controls the fuel pump relay. If you unplug it the fuel pump will run whenever the ign switch is on. So especially on a track car I would unplug the relay and add a toggle switch so you can cut the fuel if theres an incident. Thats how both my cars are setup. On a streetcar you can hide the switch as a theft deterrent. Theres a simple diagram somewhere in the archives.

Yeah, one thing I realized was the fuel pump coming on all the time. I should be able to change that with the toggle switch.
