12a bolt thread???
Sorry I did a search and am not getting any matches.
I'm trying to take appart a 12a. Is the bolt holding the front pully on the crank a standard thread (right hand) or is it reverse threaded (left hand). I tried taking it off last night and I broke a 1/2 inch craftsman breaker bar! My half inch craftsman impact woulden't touch it.
I'm grabing the 1" braker bar set from work tonight (and swinging by sears to replace my 1/2" one) so the bolt is going to come off one way or another. I was dam tempted to just torch it off last night but came to my sences before I did anything foolish.
So does anyone know...is it a LH thread of a RH thread. I want to know before I force it the wrong direction and brake the bolt off.

after reading your post more, you broke a 1/2" breaker bar on it?? Sounds like its frozen on there pretty good. you might have to heat it up to free it up. I would use heat as the last resort though. Good luck

Its factory torque is about 80-98 ft-lbs plus they use a lock-tite type of crap. The only good way to get it off its real impact gun, the one that would take the flywheel nut off also... I nearly broke my 1/2'' drive breaker also. Its alot better to use an impact becauseof the way the bolt is made, its not just a straight bolt, its more like a thick threaded pipe almost.

Well my half inch impact took the fly wheel nut off alright....had to put it back on so I had more leverage to hold the crank still when torquing on the front bolt....
Maybe I should also borrow the big snap-on 1" impact here at work. The thing is a beast but it should get it off....or brake sockets trying.

this reminds me of a time when a mechanic was using this huge 3/4" direct drive drill. he was tearing it up. then it grabed a bur, spun his wrists around 2 times before he got to let go. ouch!

Just figured I would give an update. It took heat to get it off. I have the feeling that I don't have enough volume/flow to realy power that big impact correctly because it didn't seam to hit much harder than my craftsman 1/2 inch one. I ended up having to heat it up till it was smoking the front seal then let it cool completley. After that the impact took it off after a little bit.

I never use impact guns, after an impact gun at a proffesional shop (so a real one) couldn't take a flywheel off, while a experienced mecanic could, by using the right "trick" (took him ONE try).
The way I now take these things off is the following: flywheel stopper (mazda piece, but others will work aswell) on, take off the oilpan and pick up tube. Use a flat surface to put the block on and have one person standing on the sides of the housings (just tip of the shoes will do), while another one has the big flywheel breaker bar mounted and just jumps on it. Works every time.
