last night the wife was complaining her GSL was running so poorly that she did not want to get on the highway with it ... so of course I have bits and pieces of carb kits so took it somewhat a part and clean and such ... well damn me one of the floats stayed in the bowl ... as in broken .... after diggng though a box of Nikki parts ... I grabbed a Nikki off of a shelf and woot woot had the needed float ... I am not a hoarder there is sometimes a need for old parts to be kept

This weekend, phase 1:

Needed to fix the plug for my trailing ignition - the other day I was playing around with wire tuck ideas and snapped the 30 year old wire in half no tach or trailing.




Then I noticed that my fan belt was TOAST. Literally falling apart and super loose. Thank's for holding out so long, baby! Sorry to push it like that. I promise I wont any more. Thankfully (thanks to ArmyOfOne) I had a spare belt lying around, so I pulled the fan to put that on. Well... I figure since the fan is off I might as well see how permanant the grime is....





Ah i see - it totally comes off. Well I can't just stop half way... so the rest has to come off.




And then Put it all back together. All this just to make a "quick trip" to the store to get ready for the interior re-do.

partly right, the binding isn't from the controll arms but rather the watts linkage. Replace everyhing but the watts budging and you'll be fine. I've never had a binding issue with mine and I've beat the he'll out of it on The Dragon and idk how many miles of backspace since I swapped them in 2007.

Another tip is to replace the factory lock washers with a lock nut. The factory washer don't actually 'lock' untill they're so tight that they cause the mounting point to pinch the bushings and pre load them. You can see this for yourself when you remove the axlen by just dropping the axle without loosening them chassis mounting points. Theyll be pinched and preloaded almost like they're spring loaded lol. The lock nut let's you tighten it to the point in which it pinches but then back it off so that the suspension can do it's job without be 'preloaded'. Hope that makes sense, I'm just about fall asleep here. .yaaaaawn.

Not today..but in the last week I sold my DCD Carbs (not big enough for a ported 13B), ordered a ProForm 650 double pumper, dug out the RB holley manifold, ordered a new brake master cylinder, idler arm bushing, fuel fittings, air filter assy., carb spacer, throttle cable bracket and intake manifold gaskets....She's been sitting for a couple of months. Winter in Colorado is more suited to trucks than FBs. I'll probably have her back on the road in two weeks.

Dropped the carbon cover plate (fills the joystick space) into place that I made over the weekend to check the fit. The fit looks good but now the panel that holds the window switches won't stay down. All but one of the retaining clips is broken and without the weight of the joystick it pops up. You can't really see that in this pic. Is that piece easy to get? If not I will figure out some alternate way to hold it down.

Looks xlnt man. I haven't been able to source one. The clips are a horrible design, dern near built to fail. We are gonna have to figure something out.

Today I started slathering Jasco paint stripper all over this 30 year old paint. Plans are to do a burnished raw steel with a light transperant black and several clear coats. Aside from that more of my crappy interior is pulled for a dump run.

Continued with paint stripping and realized that I have bondo I didn't realize. That kille my plan to do raw metal look. Removed and threw away the black plactic between the taillights. Plan is to mount liscence plate there and get some Type 1 plate lights mounted. I hate that ugly piece of plastic, so pointless. Tomorrow I'll start bondo work (shaving passenger side door handle and mirror, all badges and radio antenna.

The little plastic thing. One of the main reasons why I don't like FB's... Silly, I know.

S1 simply has hole in the body for the license plate bolts and the lights so mr poo poo has to find somethign else to pull you over for

There ya go. I forgot about the nylock trick. I remember reading about that long ago, and about the suspension binding even longer ago.
For daily street driving, you're probably fine.

Well, I wasn't really wanting to sell but I got a good offer that I can't pass up. The guy use to have an FB but wrecked it somehow and said he's been looking for an SA ever since. He's been bugging me everyday making sure I still have it because he really wants it. I think he'll take good care of it, he says it'll be garaged and only driven on the weekends. I let him know of the few issues it does have and he said he would fix them and he didn't even lower his offer. If I hadn't gotten a good offer I would have kept it in my garage out back and slowly fixed the few issues but I wouldn't have registered it again for a few years. I just bought a 1993 Protege to DD and lets just say I'm getting enough for my SA to cover what I paid for it and the Protege so I'm basically coming out of this situation with a free car. I am sad to let her go but I know she'll be taken care of. I also wouldn't have sold to someone who wasn't familiar with the Rotary engine, this guy knows his stuff maybe even better than I do so it'll be okay. I'm not out of the Rotary game for good, just for now. Mazda for life!

Sad I wanted an SA but ended up with an FB .
On another note I pulled out my door panels today cause I'm building a race car with cage. Anyone ever notice how heavy these door panels are? They're like 10 lbs or something .
I honestly feel that Mazda did worse on the FB compared to SA.

Got new brakes loaded and installed in new calipers on my GSL-SE spindles. The spindles will go on when I do the rear axle conversion, which will probably be in about a month or two. Also filled my GLS-SE diff with gear oil. I really can't wait to get this on the car.

I had a yellow '79 2 years ago. Someone offered me a truck in trade. I had only had her about 10 days and was starting to realize what was needed. I watched him fix her up over a year. and went another year without a 7. Now I've got a '80 and am inspired every time I read of someone who got a newer model, when they miss the oldie.

I respect your strength to let her go. Holding her from use is sad too.

And I found all of this while going through the entire car with all the bins of parts and such that was included in the sale. Among other things was:
A complete A/C system for the S4 engine
Another S4 UIM and LIM
Complete rat's nest
Stock Turbo II TMIC
And some other odds and ends

So today I took the TII out for a spin and that thing RIPS!! Compared to my little, completely stock, worn out 12a the TII felt like a rocket! Unfortunately the plows haven't cleaned up the 3" or so of snow and sleet we got yesterday and into last night so I couldn't fully open her up. I took a video again of my drive and will post it as soon as it's on YouTube. Uploading 1080p 30fps video takes a very long time...
This is what I did, also on my build thread. Edging ever closer to the swap...

I bought an 84 parts car... that was cleaner then the 84 gsl so now the gsl was the parts car and the 84 gs is the savior car. The 84 gsl had way to much rust on her. So I stripped the gsl and scrapped it got all the goodies of her first sold some of them and got the 84 gs in the garage, the 84 gs now has a limited slip rear end with drums, (I know disc are better but a sleeper is way better) pulled the 12a and trans and drivershaft from the GSL with the fuel tank and fuel pump (we all know an extra fuel tank that doesn't leak is a good idea to have laying around). In the next couple of weeks looking at getting a rebuilt 12a or rebuilding the old 12a (leaky seals) nothing internal just a bad coolant leak is all. If I can find a 13b I would go that route but money is tight at the moment.
