Agreed! I've got a sunroof rattle I'm planning on attacking here soon.

In the mean time: Last night / today - pulling carpets, liner, cutting new carpet liner, shampooing and steam cleaning carpets, then installing Hushmat on the entire beast

My 79 doesn't rattle. Of course, it's up on jack stands and has no engine or tranny in it right now, but it doesn't rattle!...

Thank you.
I'm working on putting them on. I'm going to replace shocks/springs and brakes. I don't want to be moving them around too much, hate to damage all my hard work and money. The tire that I have on are like brand new so I'm going to take them off the waffles and put them on the mesh wheels.

I got the new head unit installed. It is not perfect but I ran out of warmth and daylight at about the same time. I will have to wire it up later. I was able to use the original bracket. I have a carbon fiber plate that is going to go underneath and I've got XM in another vehicle so I will mount one of those probably where the ash tray is.

I would like to touch up the paint on that center trim piece. Does anyone know who makes a reasonable match for that silvery color? I suppose I should just respray all of it. So the color question still stands.

Source of the problem located! (video with audio)

Solution: There was an approximate .035" of 'slop' where the fiber washers on the hinge pin had worn/compressed over the years. It was allowing the hatch to shift on hard left/right jostles of the chassis, and it made that horrid noise.

I cut a 3/4 round shim out of of some .030" gasket stock I had, saturated it with 3-in-1 oil, and slid it down between the original fiber washer and the hinge base. I also lubricated the original washers & treated the rubber spacer under it with food-grade silicone liquid.

Noise is gone; I did a test-dive thrash throughthe worst decayed stretch of road in town (Woodview between Peyton and Pipeline) and my teeth may have rattled, but nothing on the car did.

Hatch seal being old probably allowed more play than it should have had, which wore the pin/washer slightly. That oiled gasket-material shim ought to be good for many years, as will the new hatch seal.

Relief.

Awesome fix! I have seen that with the parts car and partly with my car but didn't even think of it. At least you have a new hatch seal so that's one less thing to worry about later and I'm sure the thing seals like a banshee.

I ordered the following for my GSL rear axle that will be installed soon:

Hopefully the weather and rods cooperate tomorrow so I can go pick up my 87 TII for the swap. Trying to decide how to proceed with a big brake swap among some other important decisions FB related but I'm getting help so that's awesome

Put in my new cheapo just painted centercaps, did some measuring for exhaust scheming, and looked at the seeping beehive. Then took my 4 year old for a ride to visit some War of northern aggression battlefields.

You do know that all that urethane in the rear suspension will cause it to bind up worse than it already does, right? Most racers either use urethane in the control arms, and use a panhard bar, or user urethane in the Watts link, lower control arms, and factory rubber in the upper control arms.

I did not know that, is there a reason that it can cause issue versus just using the stock rubber bushings? I'd be interested to learn these things. I just thought that since everyone that buys bushings from them usually gets the full kit and installs them all I might as well do the same.

I'm not planning on racing this car that these will be installed on, just used for cruising and I'll build up another FB for racing later. Thanks for the tip though, I appreciate it

FINALLY, I have discovered my rough running issue. Maybe.

Putting the drain plug back in after an oil change, and saw that the top right bolt on my intake manifold had broken out. I thought "Aha! I'll just tighten that back up!" Aaaaand its broken. A piece of it is stuck in the housing, so next weekend, off comes the intake and all of the dressings, to replace the el cheepo aluminum bolts with some shiny new (insert other metal here) bolts. That is, after I get the broken bit out of the housing....

you guys are making some good progress!

my news; i'm picking up my old 79 this weekend... Node told me to come get it. so i'm kind of looking forward to having a 1st gen to drive for a change! i drove a 1st gen from like 1993-2005, and i miss it. the FC's don't cut it, although the vert is nice, and the Rx8 is pretty good too, but they just aren't SA's....
