I just read several of the 10 or 11 year old threads. No reason to rehash this. If the FPD is leaking I will replace it. And for good measure I will replace the O2 sensor also.

I have some kind of curse on me. Maybe cosmic karma which prevents me from ever having three working vehicles at the same time. In this case I was getting close to putting the GSL-EV back on the road and so the GSL-SE has to have something go wrong. At the moment I am down to one working vehicle and it isn't an Rx-7.

BAH! Coolant leak from rear of front housing at the top and dribbling into the middle recess of
the intake manifold.

I notice the coolant in the overflow being a bit lower before DGRR and I checked it again
yesterday and it was almost empty. So I started looking to see where it was going. I have 2
12A cores I've been slowly prepping for a ported rebuild but I'm not ready for that project yet.

I'm gonna get some of the AlumaSeal and pour that in and see how it works on the leak.
Hopefully it work as well as it has for Kententsu.

85 GSL-SE: Before lunch I grabbed a fire extinguisher and a couple of people to assist with finding the gas smell. Hood open look around and I think I located the pressure dampener. Get in the car and turn it over and damn if it doesnt start right up. Bunch of blue smoke probably from the all the cranking yesterday and it idles by itself at 2500 rpm for about 20 seconds and then drops back to normal 500-600 rpm (I know this is a bit low). Cant find any evidence of gas anywhere and no smell. Turn it off after a minute or so. I want this to be a fluke but I know it will come back.

When poking around I found a hose that is not connected and I wasn't able to see where it is supposed to connect. The end is the near the bottom center on the left side of the charcoal canister and I cant see what the other end connects to but it goes behind the intake manifold (See photo 2.) So what does this connect to and where does the loose end go?

I attached the bracket to the seat, put it in place. A little to high, I felt like Andre the Giant, though I had an inch of headroom still. I'll remove the slider and forego fore and aft adjustment.

I talked to my exhaust fab guy again about starter issue... I was right my starter is fine. He tested the new one, and my old one, and returned the new part. I made an appointment to try to get the wiring straight (with that special A/T inhibitor connection) next Wed. I get to climb around in the pit. The first chance I'll have to stand under the belly of the beast.

My guy is 6'3" and I always think he will be crowded in the 7 and not want to drive it. But he fits pretty nice....

That was rather good feeling. Now to work on researching a better blow through setup.

Today:

So i spent an extra day on the sub box - i wasn't totally happy with the fitment of the filler panel i put on the inside (to reduce inner box volume to exact sub spec), so I filled in the gaps with wood glue. Will let it set another day before dropping the sub in and bolting the box to the frame of the car and carpeting it. It will be going at an angle where the passenger storage bin was.



Sanded down all seams, took the router to the edges, and then smoothed that out with the sander again. I did the routing / sanding late at night in the dark with a spotlight. I got distracted (mosquito perhaps? dont recall) and let the router sit for a second and made a boo-boo on the face plate. No worries it'll be carpeted. But i filled the gouge and the holding-screw holes for a nice clean finish.



I was on a roll so I decided to take apart the stereo and try to find what was up with my wiring - see if I had some wires crossed or something. I quadruple checked all my wiring and as far as i can tell i'm spot on. I have no idea why i'm getting progressively worse line noise and my tape deck now acts as a microphone. Enough for today. I'm tired. Calling it!

ioTus - Nice sub box

I wish I was deep into a project. I've been side tracked for more than 6 months of work for Uncle Sugar, but now I'm finally settled into normal 5-5 army life again. Now that I have a disgusting mess all around my '85 GS I will take some pictures of my woes and start fishing for advice and comments in a build thread. I figured if I just start working at getting everything out from under the hood and off the long block I will fill like taking the keg out with a hoist and doing the overhaul on it my 7 deserves.

Pulled the nuts off the two lower control arms this evening. The rest are going to take wrenching as the impact gun won't get into the places I need it to. Of course, I don't have any 21mm wrenches, soooo off to the hardware store tomorrow.

Also tested my junkyard bilsteins and now I know why they were in the junk yard. :p Deciding whether to have them rebuilt (and be delayed several weeks) or just get some Illuminas for the rear and call it a week. Also open to other suggestions.

Fungus, when I took mine apart last summer I was able to use some kind of floppy headed impact extension from Harbor freight to get to everything, as best I can recall.

Like this one? Looks like I'll be getting one of those and maybe a 21mm wrench for good measure.

Looks like I can use Bilsteins for an AE86 Corolla (PN: 24-003193). The question is whether they need re-valving or not. I can't imagine they need it if I"m only going to run 200 lb springs (at the most). In that case, it'll be cheaper to get these than to refurb my existing shocks.

Yes, I used one of those, and I got a set of 1/2" impact extensions that allowed the socket to wobble a little also.

And I'll be interested to see how the bilsteins work. Direct replacement?

Thanks to j9fd3s, I found the right shock to get. Bilstein PN# B46-0317. They need a different bushing, which Bilstein supplies. The old one gets pressed out and the new one gets pressed in. Other than that, a direct bolt-in. Got them ordered from Allshocks.com a few minutes ago. If anyone needs any Bilsteins in need of a rebuild, you can have them for shipping.

Cookboy, yeah, I figured I'd also need a 1/2" extension. Both are on my shopping list.

..... and she ran like a dream other then the sub 4000 rpm issues ... I actually don't usaully speed with her ... but tonight on the way back 5 gear 85 - 90 mph and ran like butter ... oh yeah

Got rear shocks removed and all of the bolts on the rear suspension loosened up. I tried using the u-joint socket adapter with the impact, but try as I might, I couldn't get my 21mm socket in the tight areas like the front LCA mount. I ended up doing all of them the old fashioned way using various methods...wrenches with pipes, a breaker bar, and a torque wrench. Each bolt presented a new problem to be solved. My arms are as sore as hell, but I conquered. Now I need to figure out a safe way to drop the axle. Or get a friend to help me safely lower the axle onto the floor dollies. I really need a transmission jack, but I really don't want to shell out for something I may use twice at the most.
