Runs when bump started won’t start off starter

Hey this is my first post here, I just got a 79 and I got it running after I bump started it and it seemed to run fine
it just doesn’t want to start on its starter
anyone know any possible fixes?

it has good voltage, compression, spark , fuel air and timing is on and it’s a fairly new starter

Welcome to the club! Always happy to see more SA's, although any RX-7 is welcome .

First off, if it's spinning slowly that's one likely reason. Check the battery, battery cables, grounds, etc. Any connection between the battery and the starter could be sapping power causing it to spin slowly. Rotaries like to be spun fast, mostly because - unlike a piston engine - they make essentially zero compression unless they're spinning, and the quicker the better. For context I use an 800CCA battery, 1000CA. Might be a little overkill, but it works every time.

Also is the car stock? I see the fender flares, but is the stock Nikki carb and all still in there? If so, and if it is turning over well, my guess then goes to some of the emissions stuff. There is a system called the "hot start assist" which opens the throttle when starting with a warm engine. The temperature sensor for this is the same one used by the choke ****, so if the choke isn't staying pulled out no matter what (it's on an electromagnet), there's a good chance the car thinks it's always hot. This also means that the hot start assist motor is opening the throttle every time you try to start it. You can also tell the motor is operating because you'll hear it, and you can see it move (it's mounted on the drivers side suspension tower). If it is moving, just unplug the single wire going to it and see if that improves anything.

I should also note that everyone has their own little starting routine, although on a stock setup you should be able to just turn the key and go.

Hopefully it's one of those things, although I'm sure some others will chime in with more ideas. Best of luck in the meantime.
