cranking but wont start, could it be starter?

If my engine is cranking but it wont turn over is it a possiblity that it is the starter? I have a feeling that is what it might be.. I just did a block weld and when I can get it to start up it sounds great and there is no white smoke out of the exhaust or anything anymore. But it still won't turn over unless I push start it. Starter?

Thanks

If the starter is turning the engine, then it isn't the starter thats the problem.

it could be that the starter is going bad and not cranking the engine fast enough

It may just be a bad connection at the starter, they tend to get pretty dirty. Just unhook the starter wires and wire brush them so the make a good clean connection. Its a good free place to start.

There are 3 things that are needed to start your engine, spark, fuel, and air. If your engine is trying to start the starter is likely doing its job. Is the engine getting spark? Is fuel going into the engine, and is the air filter clean? Go to the FSM and do the necessary trouble shooting.

He said he push started it and it ran fine, so its either a weak battery or the starter.

yep the only other thing that could cause that problem is low compression. Check the compression. Maybe your motor needs rebuilt. About once a week or so I have to push start mine. I think mine however is grounding related because when I used multi acc at the same time the heat blows weaker and the wipers run slower and the lights dim. I just threw in an optima red top so i know its not the batt.

Cars with low compression usually only start with a push start. Also, if you car is cranking it is turning over. Turning over refers to the crank spinning. What your motor is not doing is called catching or firing. So, in the future, if you could go ahead an correct your terminology that would be great, mkay.

Didnt he say it would only start with a push start?? The other thing that could be causing mine is leaky injectors. Maybe check those on yours as well. if they pour instead of spray they may need rebuilt or replaced.
