Ash Tray Replacement to Hold Console Stuff
I wanted to add some switch gear to the center console, some things for the new-ish aux input for my factory stereo. So I figured a good place would be to make a slide in tray that replaces the ash tray. This is the result. Left to right it's a power switch to turn relays on/off for the radio or BT in the signal path, a jack for hard wire aux in (instead of BT) , a resistive volume control, and the BT adapter.
The whole assembly slides in/out just like the ashtray does. It's built out of scrap red ABS that I had, heated and bent to match the ash tray profile, added some weather stripping to "ride" in the slot. The front face is a piece of 1/4" plex that I cut, drilled and finished with rattle can primer and sf black. I faffed around a lot with what the electronics would be and it changed an awful lot, so it's not got a **** for every hole. The power switch was an after thought, for example. And orignally I wanted volume/bass/treble and then the BT adapter but I couldn't find a good preamp level tone control that didn't sound like a direct connection to the tachometer in audible form.
Anyway here's a shot of it partially slid out so you can see what I'm talking about.

Wow. Wow. Is that how the SA's console is laid out? That looks great, and factory, and is much nicer than the stock FB layout.
So there IS something an SA has over an FB.... Interesting...
"...a **** for every hole". Man's dream for thousands of years.

It *is* a nice center console design. But it is 83 GSL and FB all the way. I do like this layout the best...and in any mod I do, it's always reversible to the factory goodness.

Nice clean work, looks almost factory.
I modded my S2 center console to house x2 Innovate dual function gauges and x1 AEM AFR wideband gauge. The cutout above is for an old school single DIN stereo.
I found 1/8" plastic sheet on Amazon that was easy to score with a utility knife and cut with a hole saw. Bond in place with plastic epoxy.

Yes a tiny little cubbie on the SA under the tuner next to the lighter. Beautiful mods might take some inspiration when I find a full rebuild project FB.
