1979 RX-7 flashers not working

OK guys- it has been a long time,,,, since my turn signal flashers stopped working. All four lights are working, but not flashing.. How do I determine which flasher is out? Can't find the answer in any of my manuals or books. Thanks!

"which flasher" - if you mean flasher relay, there is only one. It is up under the dash on the driver-side, near the side. There are a collection of electronics there. I think on the 79 (which is unique to that yr I believe) is a silver cylinder with a 3 -prong harness connection at one end....start there.

Stu, where can I go on-line that will give me an accurate part number for the 1979 Flasher relay? My problem is that if I get it out or hire someone to get it out, I need the part or I will be down while everyone searches for the part.

Mazda factory number will not help you much as these are NLA from them. There may be component-maker numbers on the housing that would help in locating a replacement.

Black plastic rectangular relay with a 3-wire connector on the bottom, attached by a screw through a tab at the top. right near the ECU, above the driver-side kick panel.

Bit of a challenge to reach the screw if I recall.

Perhaps some DeOxIt? Clean the contacts on the flasher.

If you haven't gotten your flasher working yet, I bought one of these a couple months ago and it worked. I'm using it as a spare as I was able to disassemble my old one and clean up the contact and it is working again. Double check the connection style as I noticed when looking on RockAuto they had a couple different arrangements for the 3 prongs, and according to Amazon, the part "This does not fit your 1979 Mazda RX-7" so I dunno? Maybe they had different styles?

You can get a digital unit and its easy to make a 2 wire jumper from the stock connection to it and it will work fine. You will lose the clickety-click when it blinks though.

Yep, that part worked in my RX-7. Check your connectors on your stock unit to make sure they look the same. I've seen different looking connectors on different sites for the same year RX-7.

The flashers they show on RockAuto for a 79 RX-7 looked nothing like the ones in my car

The flasher they showed for the 79 Mazda 626 was a dead ringer which is what the one on Amazon(I bought it on amazon for free 2-day amazon prime shipping and returns if necessary)

So does this Tridon flasher still do the clickity-click when flashing?

Great find by the way. I should have searched harder on Rockauto. Looks like standard and airtex have the part specs goofed up for RX7. If you look at the GLC it shows both the 3 prong and 2 prong flashers as being the correct part. One has to be wrong. That Tridon part says its good for GLC, 626, RX3 & 4 and bunch more.

Just wanted to report back to you guys and say that the Tridon part from Amazon worked fine. I took it in to my mechanic, and 30 minutes later and $40, it was installed! He had to make some modifications to make it work. Yes the mount will not fit. But he stuck it up there and we are a flashing!! Thanks again!

Glad to hear it worked gosman!
t_g, the only difference from the stock one is the lack of the tab for hanging it under the dash, same ole click click sound.

Here you go, my new favorite video:

I'm sure you could wire in your own click sound, maybe just a relay would be enough of a sound?

Here's a clip of my 79 blinker opened up, showing why you get that clicky sound.
