State Ref & Socal Warning
Yeah, It happened...after 5 years of owning modified cars (3 with the fd). It finally happened..and the worst part was... I was pulling out of school. CHP was waitiing to grab anyone with a modified car and openly stated that "due to the upcoming release of the fast and the furious film... they had a meeting and there was a CHP bulletin" So... watch out guys.
I knew the drill being that I've previously worked in the industry and have had multiple friends go through this. However, none with an RX7. Didn't help this guy was a former "Drag Net" member and was trained in a "special seminar" in Ontario to deal with "street racing kids".
Pretty much I'm thinking to just pay the fine. But I don't know what happens after that, if you are labeled a polluter permanent or what the deal is.
My car is non-seq with emissions removed and a large ported fresh engine from Lucky 7 (
) Just finished breaking it in and was having fun this week. Now to be driving 20mph and get this... is pretty devastating.
Any suggestions aside from the obvious would be appreciated.
Good luck cause looks like its crackdown season....again

i usually try to sway people in cali to try and retain the cars for smoggability. with a powerFC and the stock twins there really is absolutely no reason to ditch everything unless you really absolutely want the car to be uncluttered and clean(even though i have built a few stock-ish cars that looked clean and performed).
of course though in california they can send you to the ref for having a K+N filter sticker on your intake because it is "reasonable cause".
anyways, sorry for your luck and glad i got out of that **** state. i rather love rolling through knowing they can't do anything to me with my NV plates on my car now. maybe someday they will let go of this idea that you can't modify a car and still keep it smog legal compliant, there have been numerous cases of people pushing ~400WHP with catalytic converters on their cars and that horsepower figure is plenty for a street car.
the cali cars i put together in full trim would probably do about 300WHP on the twins, which is still pretty respectable for a 2 rotor that can pull into a smog station and pass cleanly. can go beyond that with a single turbo, if they would pull their thumbs out of their *** and realize that most people go all or nothing with emissions with their wacky by the book rules. i'm glad nevada is relaxed and how it should be. basically you just need a catalyst, EGR, engine and smog pump and that only applies to people living in las vegas.

Keep your car legit people! or.... Keep it looking stock people! Straight sleeper status...
Also I know from experience you can modify your car and still have it pass an emissions test or even worse a state ref test.
Also, my buddy got a ref ticket for his T2... Yet for whatever reason just went to the local PD and they were like sure we'll sign it off... and they did and he sent it in and they cleared him even though it clearly stated to go to state Ref... Kinda weird huh?

This is why I limited my performance work on my S5 TurboVert to stay on the good side of smog legal. Perhaps it's 300+ smog legal HP and underhood an exterior attention to detail might pay off one day and get me best Cali FC at a future 7Stock.
i got a state ref ticket last year from the sheriff, 2 blocks from my house. paid the ticket ($597) and that was it, never went to the state ref, never changed anything. i was never labelled as a gross polluter and no increases in registration. it would have cost me about $3000 to put my car back to stock. this is one reason why i am selling it. i have a 1974 rx3 in the works, so i can stay rotary and not worry about the cops.

Maybe the 8% and 15% window tint on my Sonata wasn't such a good idea, since it's registered here in Cali.. *whistles*
However....

So I'm not worried so much about the FD.

Because of this thread, prices on the "smog-exempt" old school RX (including any make/model pre-76) just MAKE ME WANT TO BUY A 1978 CAMARO AND GROW A STACHE WHILE WEARING TIGHT RED LEATHER PANTS by 300%. thank you

Talked to another buddy thats a local police officer. He confirmed the bulletin regarding to the increase of street racing in Southern California and hype of the upcoming film "Fast 5". It went to local, sheriff, and CHP.
After dealing with this ego chp guy I went straight to the local ref. He gave me some info so I'm not too worried. I suppose its all apart of doing business in CA. My intake & intercooler are exempt so I'll get stickers for those. Just have to put the stock turboback back on and figure out the EGR.
Regardless, a friendly warning! I suppose widebody catless FD's stick out like a sore thumb even when driving 20mph after leaving a parking lot...when the speed limit is 40mph. haha

Also they were checking out my suspension..thinking my external reservoirs on my coilovers were "air ride suspension"
Dude you're exhaust is quiet enough and have the stock body. I think the front mount, widebody, and carbon hood were the red flags. Also your car is essentially stock as well as sequential.... even if you were to get a ticket.. I think you'd be fine. I'm just nail biting due to being non-seq all emissions removed even though air pump is in place. I don't throw any codes so I'm going to try and get away with just putting all the cats back on and removing the BOV. My intake, intercooler, etc is carb legal. Anyway... see you at Formula D!
Yes catless Canister style muffler but it wasn't in visible sight. The CHP officer was parked in the middle of the street waiting for cars to leave the college. I literally JUST pulled put of the parking lot and he started his car and flipped as soon as I passed him. He saw my FMIC and turned on his car... used "exhaust" as an excuse. I currently had an Exhaust Fix It... and he gave me the ref anyway and referenced it on the ticket for modified exhaust. Which is a JOKE considering I already had a ticket from CHP before. They checked my car and were totally cool with it. This guy was on a power trip. Back up came as well..and he was like I have no idea why he's doing this but he's higher ranked than me and was certified for this. (No ordinary cop or CHP can give u a ref ticket...they have to take classes on modified cars/racing) That is my car in the avatar, car is painted... carbon hood and FMIC got his attention.

So they basically handed you a nice little ticket and sent you on your way to face the ref?
no towing of car? Well update us when the letter arrives in the mail, I'm curious as to what the fine is.

Have donuts ready on you all the time and just bribe the popos. J/K! That is why I stay old school. I love the RX7 line, but Kalifornia smog kills that dream for me. Can't wait for one of these days to move out Kalifornia and go to a car/gun friendly state.
Put the stock exhaust on today.. boy o boy is it restrictive & quiet. No fun for me anytime soon

Ticket should arrive week-2 weeks. I just don't understand how I'm supposed to not drive my car in this waiting period. The CHP officer said if I'm driving I'll just get cited for the same thing, everywhere I've read said that I will get my car impounded as its a moving violation to drive with a ref ticket. I even called CHP and they said I'll get cited for the same thing also.. so.. thats why I drove around today...let alone swapped to stock exhaust. It's getting confusing and irritating... I planned a drive to Santa Barbara next week. Guess thats off.
