a sick dog's future: to let live or put down?
hey west,
you guys must know me as one of the infamous postwhores on the west,
along as the guy who was trying to sell his TII lip and sideskirts to save his dog.
well, in the end, my pops ended up buying Yogi's insulin and prescription food.
after a month and almost a half,
we ran out of dog food and waiting for the vet to get the order,
but they still have nothing yet.
anyway,
to wrap it all up,
Yogi has diabetes and hasn't progressed since we diagnosed the problem.
the vet said that he'd do a blood test several months after taking the insulin so he can change the dosage if needed.
but even so with that,
it's been hard taking care of him,
making sure that somebody has to be home to satisfy his needs
(feed him water, make sure somebody can take him outside to pee, feed him when hungry, etc.),
just like any other diabetic person would need.
it gets out of hand when he pees around the house because he can't hold it anymore like he used to.
although i never did take my parent's suggestion into consideration,
me and my sister are starting to think about it...
should we put him to sleep? or try to see if Yogi can still regain the health he once had?
Yogi is almost 7 years old...
here's an old picture when he was still fine

and a picture that jason (ILEP) took

notice, how you can see his spine and ribs in the second picture... *sigh*
much support for Yogi is appreciated.
Yogi's my first dog and it's almost too hard to put him to sleep...
anybody had similar stories before?
thanks.

You might be able find him a home that's willing to put up with his health problems. If that's not possible it would probably be best to put the dog down. No need to prolong its suffering.
I'd have to say the same. No matter what you decide, just understand that you're doing it because you care about your dog and want the best for him, even if that means putting him to rest.

wow Kent, I'm so sorry to hear about that.

that's a tough decision, but ultimately it's one that will have consequences either way, and it's you, not us, who will have to live with it. so no matter what we say, make sure it's something you can deal with and are satisfied was the best solution for all involved.
firstly, can you afford his food and medication indefinitely?
secondly, is he in pain and struggling to get around?
if you can't afford his care or don't have the time to devote, then I'd suggest seeing if anyone else can adopt him (advertise), provided you give them the full background about his condition and needs. I had to give away my dog of several years when I lost my house. we couldn't bear to put her down just because we couldn't keep her. we wanted her to live a full life...even if she didn't live much longer. last I heard she was doing well with her new family.
if you can't find anyone to adopt him and can no longer afford his treatment and particularly if he's in pain, then it's better for him if you put him to sleep.
what's in this prescription food that makes it special? ask your vet if there's anything you can give him that's suitable while you wait. for instance, should he be eating a high fiber or high carbohydrate diet...

The only way I've ever put down an animal is if it's in pain, or it's way of life is seriously hindered.
I have a rather sickly cat at home, she is 19 and has health problems that are manageable. I give her medicine twice a day and I routinely take her to the vet for blood tests. I give her meds for her heart, thyroid, and blood pressure. With her meds she is just fine, actually cought a field mouse the other day lol...
So far I've spent thousands on her but at the end of the day it has all been worth it. It's been 2 1/2 years since she was diagnosed and she is still with me. Money well spent IMO.
I really feel for you and your dog.

i feel like at times his vision is wearing away only because he isn't as attentive as he used to be.
for example, tossing food to him and him catching it in his mouth right away.
majority of his muscles has diminished, he can can't jump on a table like he used to in the backyard.
so far, my sister's been feeding him oatmeal + jarred baby food from what she found out online after researching for diabetic dog diets.
it's currently our substitute food until we get the actual food... (gosh damnit, stupid vet lied about it arriving in a week)

part of that could be due to old age too. seven years is quite old. that's an issue that is unavoidable and will affect all your dogs at some point. just like with human beings, aging isn't pretty. for me, I guess, the decision would hinge on whether he was in pain. I'm sure the alternative diet will sustain him just as well as the vet's diet...at least for the interim.
I cant say you should cook him based on his health condition

I'd say put the dog to sleep. I know is a very difficult decision, but it is best for the dog to end his suffering he's going through. **** i hate **** like this, man. i consider my baby as my family and would basically do anything for her haha. but yeah, there is going to be that one day when i, have to make a decision like your going through.
RIP dookie i will always remember you

I remember when I had a dog. She was a beast. Good luck with whatever course of action you take. I'm sure he knows how much you cared for him. If he could talk he would say I love you knitter.
damn...my dog is 15yrs old and i am so grateful to still have him around. i grew up the guy.
its sucks cuz i know his time will come soon. i just hate thinking about it. i love my SNOOP!!
its a tough decision man but just do what you feel is best for him. dont let the pup suffer

Don't put Her/Him Down simply cause its diagnosed... my dog lived for 12 years and died of a mast cell tumor on the spleen she only lived for 5 weeks...
Let it Live.... if shes not suffering. if its suffering on a scale of 3 dont put it down.... mine was a 8.. and it was really bad.
